Parallelogram area problem

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a simple parallelogram shape and tried to calculate the area using the AREA command but it's giving me the wrong area. It's giving me 995.28m2 but it should actually be 1084.20m2.

I'm not sure what I've done wrong here, could someone help me out?

Thanks!

Because the parallelogram is not rectangular, the answer is not, as you surmised, 1084.2m2.

I am not sure what it should be, as your .png does not provide enough information to figure it out, such as a single angular dimension, or the distance along the Y axis, between the opposing sides, but it MUST be LESS than 1084.2m2.

All you need to do to determine the AREA is select it, and look at the PROPERTIES or Quick Properties, like in the screenshot.

Using the AREA command, just start the command, then hit ENTER to accept the default option, then select the parallelogram, and it will report the area at the commandline, in square millimeters. Move the decimal point to the left 6 places, and you now have the area in square meters.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your reply! I was told that the area of a parallelogram had to match the area of a corresponding rectangle but that was obviously wrong! After doing some more reading up on the maths I think I've finally gotten my head around it. The 995.28m2 that AutoCAD is giving me was correct all along.

Thanks again!

If the orthogonal distance between the opposing sides of the parallelogram (along the Y axis, in this case), is the same as the rectangle's height, and the length of the other sides of the parallelogram are the same as the Z axis length of the rectangle's other sides, THEN THEY WILL HAVE THE SAME AREA, regardless of any angle measurements.

Glad you are back on the tracks. :)
