    Default Extra layers

    Hi Guys

I have a template set up that I use for my drawings.
I have just noticed that I have a heap of extra layers
in this template that I didn't put in there.
    Is this normal.
I tried to delete some of them but Autocad won't let me.

    Any advice?
    Thanks Dodge.

Templates often contain layers. The person who made the template created them because they wanted to have them there at the start of each new drawing. This is often helpful for maintaining CAD standars (everyone using the same layers) and it's more convenient than having to create them each time a drawing is started.

If you do not need these layers, they can be removed using the PURGE command.

    Thanks Cad tutor
I made the template myself and certainly didn't put the layers in I'm talking about. I am new to Autocad (2 weeks) and I followed a book for creating layers. I only put in 6 layers and now I have 21???

    Well, they didn't create themselves.

Maybe you have a 3rd party routine that added some layers.

Maybe you inserted a block into your template and the entities on this block reside on the "new" layers. This would also explain why they can't be purged.

hahaha.... that line made me laugh.

Dodge, did you copy/paste anything in the drawing when you made the template? did you use any type of Lisp Routine? did you use a block? which layers "created" themselves, what are the names?

That was more me thinking to myself than a loud statement....

Didn't mean for it to sound condescending...
