grain Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 Can anyone recommend a laptop with a screen and specification suited to CAD. (Or is it better to keep away from laptops) Quote
manhattan Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 best to keep away from laptops if possible mate. you're gonna need a reasonably high spec machine for cad work & this will cost you a fortune as a laptop. it really depends on your budget but you wont get anything cad worthy for less than £1000 & even then that would be entry level. desktops are much better value for money Quote
chulse Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I have an HP Compaq 8710w mobile workstation and I love it. Costly though and very heavy. Suits me well... Quote
nocturne00 Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 A laptop that cost more than $1500 and above could handle it. then again go for standard specs, not just the minimum required for CAD. 2.0GHz dual core processor and 2GB RAM is at least what it must have Quote
Tankman Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 My IBM Thinkpad™ works great! Screen is crystal clear, processor is fast. You can check eBay for used pricing. I also use two desktops but, sometimes prefer my "Brick." "Brick" is the nickname pinned on Thinkpad™ laptops. Quote

Tankman Posted November 6, 2008 Posted November 6, 2008 My IBM THINKPAD works great too. Even though the screen is smaller compared to the desktop, I still prefer this now since started using it before 4 months. Screen is smaller indeed, but crystal clear. My desktop monitor, wall mounted, is a 36" LCD. I do enjoy the BIG monitor however, for some unknown reason I do like the Thinkpad™! In the office, desktop. Out of the office, Thinkpad™. Or this desktop! Quote
grain Posted November 6, 2008 Author Posted November 6, 2008 Max of £2500 for resources related to CAD. This is for no office work. P.S I appreciate everyones help so far. Quote
malevy Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 I just bought the 15" Apple Mac book Pro .. awesome laptop and vista x64 runs great on it. I have 3ds and autocad and they both run faster then any desktop or laptop i have owned. Can anyone recommend a laptop with a screen and specification suited to CAD. (Or is it better to keep away from laptops) Quote
rookie37 Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Computers are very fast these days however, they are also bloatware magnets It's like buying a porche but using it to tow a trailer. If you buy a laptop, be carfull of loading too much on it. Quote

neekcotrack Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Hey...one gay will need to sell his house again..ha..ha.. Take a look at this if you want a labtop: http://www.alienware.com/customize/area-51-m9750-notebook.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M9750&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT It will be around 1500 with 2 GB Ram. Take a look at this if you want a desktop: http://www.alienware.com/customize/area-51-7500-desktop.aspx?SysCode=PC-AREA51-7500-R5&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT&tab=specs_tab It will be around 1000 with 2 GB Ram. Labtop is a good price, but the desktop is a little steap. Quote
Tankman Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 How do I go about getting one of those?! Monitor or Thinkpad™? Either way' date=' work, work, work! I'm lucky, AutoCAD is my [i']Erector Set[/i]. Fun program and certainly gets the job done, precisely! Quote

We are finding out that the Apple Mighty Mouse will not work the same in windows as Apple did not make any drivers to take advantage of the scroll button. Quote
Tankman Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 How do I go about getting one of those?! First, you have to drink the Canadian! Quote
