Assigning custom materials to door styles

Ok, I've hit another AEC wall, I've got a workaround, but it's not ideal.

So I've managed to assign materials to the model view of my windows and walls via the display properties tabs, but the door styles have an extra tab called 'materials' and despite assigning the layer in display properties to that of my own wood/gloss paint materials, the material assignment in this tab seems to overide that.

Problem is the material definitions I can choose from here in the drop down are only 3 (which appear in my materials pallette) of the standard Autocad materials. I am unable to assign my own existing material definitions from the sene. Is there anyway to assign my definitions, or better yet, override these materials so the materials are assigned by layer as with my walls and windows? The only way I can make it work now is to explode the AEC objects so they turn to surfaes with material by layer.
