Encomium Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Hey, posting this here since I couldn't find a more appropriate subforum. I'm looking for a new mouse for my PC. I'm mostly going to use it to draw in CAD and GIS; I have a sketchpad for more intricate work such as freestyle drawing. I've usually bought Logitech but the last three all started double clicking when I used the left mouse button after a year or so, and I'm reluctant to get the latest one (Logitech Performance); furthermore the Performance mouse feels a bit too large for my palm. I'd say the best mouse I've ever used is the MX Revolution, which gets top prize mostly for its shape. Well, I'm trying to expand beyond Logitech. The only reasonable alternative I've found are high-end gaming mice, although the reviews tend to be a bit opaque since they're based on a rather different usage pattern that I'm not familiar with. Super responsiveness isn't as crucial for me as it is for an FPS gamer; I'd say the most important qualities I'm after are efficiency and the ability to use it for a long time without discomfort. That said, this mouse seems quite interesting: http://www.amazon.com/Cyborg-T-Wireless-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B003CP0BHW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top I'm quite mobile and spend a lot of time at random coffee shops so wireless is a must. The biggest cons with the mouse above is the long usb receiver (gotten used to the short ones from Logitech) and battery life. Any suggestions for alternatives? Quote
nestly Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I really like the Logitech M705 and Microsoft 6000. Both are smaller than average, and both have tilt wheels, giving them 8 & 7 buttons respectively. Both also use the micro receivers. Quote
Encomium Posted February 19, 2012 Author Posted February 19, 2012 (edited) thanks for the reply nestly. i actually had the M705, but it started double clicking furiously. It's also a bit too small for my palm -- of course, mouse preference is hugely to do with the shape of one's hand, which is why buying mice based on reviews is tricky. I'll check the other one. nestly Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Yeah, I'm very particular about feel of the middle button (wheel), so I won't buy any mouse I can't put my hands on first. If the M705 was too small, you can probably forget about the MS 6000 as well since it's length and height are a bit less than the Logitech .... width is about the same. Quote
Tankman Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Been usin', and will continue to do so, use the Logitech. I've never had a problem. Might try Logitech customer service, bet they would pitch in. Why not try? I've handled the Cyborg, just a bit "busy" for me. Quote
Dadgad Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Having used Logitech previously, went through 3 of them, I am currently using a couple of different ones from E-blue. I favor one with at least 5 buttons, wireless for sure. They make a few different models which are really tiny, but the scroll wheel is so small and smooth that it annoyed me if my finger was damp at all, it was really hard to turn. The one I favor now is the ARCO 2, which is not too big, and has a great wheel on it, and a DPI setting switch offering 4 different settings. It is a right handed mouse, meaning that the extra thumb buttons are on the left side, so less than ideal for a southpaw. They have lots of different models, and they cost about 40% of the logitech ones. It also has the micro receiver. Logitech does make a bluetooth mouse now, which requires no receiver, as it works over bluetooth, which I've not tried, but found interesting. Quote
Tankman Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 **Note** The MS 6000 wireless mouse is currently on sale $14.99 USD at Staples this week. A very decent mouse, a great price too! And, no, I don't work for Staples ! Quote
Dadgad Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 That's seriously cheap, I paid about $19 for the one I'm using now, but I'm half a world away from the nearest Staples. I know Logitech has some other additional software add-on tricks up their sleeve too, as reported on the forum recently by one of the usual suspects. Quote

Encomium Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks, good points. I realize that after exclusively using Logitech mice for about a decade I'm probably taking certain things for granted. Particularly with the recent improvements to the tracking mechanism that makes more or less any surface usable. I'm a landscape architect and I need to whip my mouse out in some fairly rugged places; what I notice with all the raving reviews of gaming mice like Naga and that Cyborg mouse is that reviewers are also buying very expensive mouse mats that are specifically designed for gaming; essentially the reviews are done in 'perfect laboratory conditions'. You could say 'sure, but just pack a metal mouse mat as well' -- okay, but the latest Logitech mice don't need that crutch to perform. Finding a suitable surface for a mouse mat is also not always an option. Something tells me I'd immediately miss the excellent tracking of the M705 if I went in another direction. Signal strength is also an issue; the Cyborg seems to have a poor receiver and again, gaming reviews are done in optimal setups where the receiver is basically placed right next to the mouse mat. Finally, customer service is excellent at Logitech and there are a host of reviews lambasting poor quality control and customer service at the top gaming mice manufacturers; bottom line: I'll get the Performance mouse from Logitech and see if I like it more than the (slightly too small for my hand) M705. I'll look for a deal on the Cyborg over the next couple of years to check if it'll keep up with the Performance MX. Quote
Ollie8974 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I just bought a Logitech Performance Mouse MX to replace a MS Intellimouse. got tired of having to replace batteries all the time. It was on sale at Best Buy for $79.00 Really like the Logitech features a rechargeable battery via an included USB cord, an on/off switch to improve battery life. Quote
CADDork Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 http://www.amazon.com/Cyborg-T-Wireless-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B003CP0BHW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top I bought one of these for gaming and I loved it. But it died after about 3 weeks and it took over 3 weeks for support to return my e-mail, so long that i forgot I had contaced them. I bought a second one in the meantime and have had no issues so far. It is nice, has weights and is adjustable in length (and width to a certain extent). Mine came with a "pinky rest" but I don't use it. Quote
