Regarding customization there are AutoLISP, VBA (discontinued from version 2010) and also ARX technology. For a detailed response will need to have more information on your vision. Even if is a good idea to give a chance to the new interface, just click on the bottom-right located button with a gear wheel on it and chose AutoCAD Classic.
