After creating a 3d model and uv'ing it. I create a custom texture in Photoshop. 99.9 percent of the time I use 1 texture map but sometimes added in textures for opacity or bump. The point is I use a custom created texture/image that will never be tilable and would be hard for others to use on their project but not impossible. Actually I have no problem with others using any texture I create because some of the texures in a single image may contain parts of royalty free images I found on the internet.

The other day I got into an argument with someone who creates 3d models and knows little about uv mapping. They take faces of their model and apply royal free textures across those faces and adjust as needed. Hence they use tilable (128 x 128, 256 x 256, 512 x 512...etc) that someone else created and offered royalty free. So they have 1 object and maybe 2 - 10 images on a single model. They offer those models up for sale and want to claim that any use of model OR images is illegal to anyone else. They claimed that another beginning modeler took a texture they applied to one of their models and renamed it.

My argument with them was that IF they use square images that they downloaded off the internet then they have no claim to ownership.

Any thoughts on this?

Hey everyone. I just recently dove into the world of 3DS Max with zero skill and knowledge in the software. I have been going over all of the 3DS Max tutorials offered on this site. I even made it into a book with a table of contents haha. Sooooooo......I need to get much better at the material editor and mapping. I think that it would help if I knew what each part meant such as noise, bump, etc. I need to get my butt onto some sites to figure this stuff out.

Hello,

I am using 3ds 2015 on a Dell running Windows 8.1 (6GB RAM, 1.9 GHz). I am extremely new to 3ds (like just downloaded four days ago). I have a problem with an object becoming distorted after applying textures to it. The object is from an older 3ds file I downloaded.

Before texturing the object looks like this:

Smooth surface, great pillow form. After I apply a texture, it turns into this:

Lines appear, the tiling is off, and there is a section that is discolored as well as distorted. I'm guessing the problem is something inherent to the object. I've searched for a solution and tried to use the smooth modifier after converting to polygon, but that hasn't had any affect. Anyone have any ideas? Im hoping for a point and click solution, but am willing to dig in with good directions.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Hi,

I am having trouble applying materials/textures. On occasion when I select an object then apply a new material, another object in the scene is also changed to the material I just assigned even though it has its own material assigned.

Basically materials are being changing automatically.

It happens with a UV map and without on an object.

The materials I am adding are Jpeg's, Bitmaps etc.

How can I stop this, or is there something I am doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated, cheers

I was looking for some type of carpet material in 3ds Max last night and maybe I'm not looking in the right location. Under the Rendering menu, I see three options: Material Editor, Material/Map Browser and Material Explorer. I couldn't even get anything to populate in Material Browser, which I'm thinking only explorers the current scene, correct? Material/Map Browser has hardly anything at all.

I do see the stock Autodesk Material Library towards the bottom, but I was hoping 3ds Max had an abundance of even better material selections. So is this all I get, the same stuff from AutoCAD? Or do people purchase material content packs and scour Google for items?

Just inquiring is all, thanks!

Hello,

I learning to work on 3Ds Max, the problem that i stuck is that i can't understand how properly import V-Ray materials and apply it to objects that they would look like in the picture.

For example i found this material on internet:

I download it, and import it to Max trough Material editor.

When i do that, i get all list of materials:

,

and thats what i dot understand, i though that it would be one material, and and i could apply it instantly, but i get this mess, or just i do something wrong?

Greetings All,

I have been modeling non-characters for years and have just started venturing into making actors for stories and have run into a problem, so far only the one.

I would greatly appreciate anyone who can help me with this. I have been trying to solve this problem for 4 days already, a couple hours here, a couple hours there and its about to drive me NUTZ!

I have modeled an eye ball model for use in my characters (eyes for a face obviously). The modeling went smooth and perfect. I then tried to texture the previously mentioned modeled eye. And everything went perfect except the texture for the Pupil and Iris also shows up on the back of the eye ball which I need them not to do.

I have ended up with an eye ball with the front of the eye on the 'front' and the 'back' of the eye. I had a similar problem 12 years ago while I was making a Lego-man in college and this happened when placing his 'face' on his head (basically a cylinder). I just used a UVW Gizmo placed the map on it and then shrank it to fit.

This method isn't seeming to work here because I am trying to do the same thing on a sphere (Round Capsule) that I did on the Cylinder.

The Lego-man problem I messed with for about 8 days also but was using Max 4 or 5 at the time and just 'accidentally' fixed by messing with the buttons in the different roll-outs over and over. I can't seem to have the same dumb luck here.

I also wished to ask if anyone who can help me solve this boggle would know an alternate way of how to put one texture on the front of the sphere and a different one on the back? I'm trying to get rid of the white line on the textures on the separation between the front and back of the eyeball.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

So I've performed some general Google searches on this but I cannot find anymore info on it. I downloaded 3DS Max Design 2013 to my home computer as a "Student License". The download apparently is missing some material libraries. Okay, so I google the problem and come up with this page:

Okay, so there is the missing material library, so far so good. However, the Maps library is still missing, and when I search for that, Autodesk apparently does not have a supplement download available for that, and it seems they do not even offer it for those that downloaded the program in the manner that I did (as opposed to those that have a running subscription).

Does anyone know where I can download the Maps library?

Hey Guys..I am trying to model a MK2 Grenade, and I wish I got more time coz I usually dedicate time for this after my work around 2-3 hours and I hope to finish the final render and submit this to the Project Challenges section. And now, I'm almost done with the modeling part, its now time for the texture and materials. I need your advice what is the best approach to texture this?Do I need to start the Checker Mapping first?Below is the final model of my own version of MK2 Grenade:

Hi

I searched the forum to find a solution to my material assigning problem.the only question similar to mine was answered by a person who indicated there were assets missing.I couldn't finds simple exact description of what assets are.

My problem is: when I open a vray material in material editor I see a list of different materials some have (standard) in front of them and some not.what should I do when I see 5 names and which one should I double click on?

this is confusing me so much and I just can't find the answer via experimental process....

Then I applied a bitmap to the walls but one wall didn't turn out right so I applied a UVW Unwrap to the object. I also have a different bitmap applied to the bottom plane to look like a concrete floor. But when I try to switch from one of the planes of the object after I fix it to another I get a box that pops up that says a modifier exists in the stack that depends on topology. I pressed the yes button and did it anyway. And the previous plane I was working on reverts to an unclear image. How do I fix that? I want to be able to fix one plane on the object and then move to anotheer plane on an object, but I have to switch to editable poly to do that. And the dialogue box keeps popping up that tells me I may get undesirable effects, and I get just that.
