  1. Each software has its own advantages and i think everyone will come across some problems at work. So what will you do when your current software lacks the functions your want or are not powerful enough? To replace it with another software which has powerful such kind of functions but weak for other functions? Or combine the two software for using?
  2. Hello, everybody! For conducting Boolean operation, I use Trim but I feel troublesome since many selections have to be carried out. So I wonder are there some new way to simplify the process? Hope anyone could give me some advice. Thank you.
  3. Is there a command to extrude something at like a an angle. Im not talking about taper but something that could extrude at an angle
  4. We have aAutoCad file with MagiCad object inside, we need modify some text from manyMAGIDIMLINE, for that we use MagiCad Object Enabler and explode it. But theresulting block contains different information from the original. For example,we have a MAGIDIMLINE with “VG + 16.32” or “VG + 16.30” ,text inside, and whenwe explode it, the resulting blocks have “VG +-0.18” and “VG +-0.20”, we don’tknow what happen!. We haveaccess to the original projects, but only need to modify one file for survey. Any Idea??? Thanks!!!
  5. I have multiple files in which i have i different drawings in autocad. Is it possible to combine all the files into one? does anyone know how to do this
  6. This may be a bit complex, so please bear with me. We are a water utility and have thousands of detail drawings of service taps and hydrant connections (maybe 11,000 total). These are in the old Microstation J format. Each drawing is divided into a top half and bottom half. The bottom half of the drawing is the actual drawing portion. The top half of the drawing is text that comes out of an Old Oracle database, into Microsoft Word 2000 through mail merge then is copied and pasted into the top portion of the card. Newer drawings done like this and opened in AutoCAD have the top portion identified as an OLE object (embedded object), while the older drawings just look like a drawing in the top. I'm looking to update the system to ArcGIS and AutoCAD. The data will be moved to a Microsoft Access database (probably later SQL Server), and I want to convert all the old Microstation drawings into an AutoCAD format. ArcGIS will provide the basemap and be linked to the database, with clickable hyperlinks to open the AutoCAD drawings. I would like to be able to keep the bottom drawing half while changing the top half of each drawing to reflect updated data in the database. If this can be automatically updated, that would be awesome. So, I'm looking for a couple things: One is the best program to automatically bulk convert the drawings from Microstation J to AutoCAD (I have 2011). Also, I'm looking for a method to display the text from the database in the top portion of the card using either mail merge with AutoCAD or some automatic method of pulling the info out of the database. Can I just copy-paste this info into AutoCAD as we did with Microstation or is there a better way? Thanks, Nick McNamara GIS Coordinator South Norwalk Electric & Water Norwalk, CT
  7. I have a drawing in paper space. When I move the drawing the dimensions and texts do not move with it. Is there something I can use where the dimensions and stuff follow the drawing .
  8. Finally got a new laptop core i-5, 64bit!!.. its truly amazing... got no more problems with my rendering and autocad works! cheers!
  9. I am little new to autocad. I was finishing up my autocad project I noticed that the little arrow next to the annotation scale on the bottom right corner of the page was gone. The little arrow shows a list of scales in autocad so you can properly scale your drawing. Does anyone know how to bring the arrow back or is it a glitch?
  10. Hi, after seeing few videos about how easy is creating pipes in sketchup I desided to try the same technique in plain Autocad (not MEP or PLANT). So, this is where I get confused. I am starting to draw a polyline, (which will be used as a path in extrude command for circle) but I cant to raise it in Z-axis. I need to change the ucs and then I can do it, which is an extra, and always confusing) step which I am trying to avoid. Also, I've tryed to use 3Dpolyline but it seems that I cant fillet it (elbow creation). So my question is what is correct proccess to create 3d pipes in plain Autocad? Thanks.
  11. As this is one of the sites we used for research while preparing our new CAD Standards (particularly with regards to STB/CTB plot style tables), I thought it only fair to share the results here, in case they may be of help to anyone looking to start or update their own CAD Standards. Partly because our company believe in an open culture for documentation such as this, and partly as I know personally how frustrating and time-consuming it can be to trawl the web for examples of existing CAD Standards. We have also included a Project Folder Organisation structure and a project-wide File Naming Convention. Our architectural/engineering company uses a combination of AutoCAD and Rhino for our work, so while this standard was designed primarily for AutoCAD, it was also developed with the aim of improving the compatibility between AutoCAD and Rhino. Please feel free to download the documents in PDF format, and I hope it proves useful to some people. http://complexitys.com/software/re-thinking-cad-standards-why-theres-never-a-good-time-and-never-a-better-time/
  12. Hi guys, I may be late in posting this. I looked around and finally found this forum. I have a project that requires dividing lots with autocad. The question is like this "Your client has asked that you divide the parcel into 3 or 4 lots (he would like 4 lots. You are to use the planning and subdivision regulation as well as the mapping standards for the State." I have the autocad file required for the parcel. I have very little knowledge in autocad and all i can do is draw lines from pt to pt. Can someone help me with this? I have downloaded the State's mapping standards. My big problem is how to use autocad to go about it.Project 1.dwg
  13. I realize that I am new and I hope this hasn't been covered before. I am linking a CAD layout to InDesign. The previous file worked perfectly. Now, however, the updated file moves if I try to print it. If I put the new layout on top of the old, it is fine. If I delete the old layout though, the new one moves regardless of what I try. This is kind of urgent, considering the deadline is tomorrow and I still have a ton of work to do.
  14. Hi all, I work for a company specializing in designing the inside of houses and for various architectural work. I have previously used Photoshop CS5, but now I need to ensure that the dimensions of each of the plans are a lot more accurate so I have turned to AutoCAD 2010, with so much praise being attributed to it. Firstly, I cannot express enough how disappointed I am with AutoCAD 2010. NOTHING is simple. Even trying to get walls with equal spacing is a NIGHTMARE. I have been told that using the Multiline is the best option, for which I have now been trying, but when I want to get a door made by putting two lines down the side of one multiline and then trying to trim it, it completely f***s up, and deletes the multilines. I have tried exploding and that hasn't helped at all. Has anyone got any good ideas on how to fix this, or an easier way to make walls and doors? Thanks, NAILGUN
  15. Hi Guys I have recently bought autocad 2012 for mac after years on 2006 on windows. I have lots of custom blocks that I have made over the years and want to transfer them to my mac version. On previous versions it used to be simple customize/transfer tab/ then open. This version does not appear so simple! If someone could help it would be much appreciated!! Thanks!!
  16. How can I do tracing in autocad? Suppose, I have two floor plans, ground floor and first floor in a single .dwg file. there are many layers with different colours. ground floor plan and first floor plan are sharing layers too. That is ground floor also has objects in the walls layer so does the first floor plan I want to to like this. I want to make the ground floor grayed out light and on the top of it I want to overlap my first floor plan. The thing is that all the layers of the objects should stay as it is. only the colour of the ground floor plan should get gray. the rest of the layers and the colours There's an option like this in ArchicAD. Is there a workaround in autocad too?
  17. i am new to this forum ...... i am using autocad2008, my boss wants me to draw a square 100x100mm in such a way so that if i take a print out in an A4 sheet(210x297mm) it should measure exactly 100mmx100mm wen i measure it using tape..... plz help i can't seem to figure this out ...
  18. I spent most of my work day searching, no luck. My issue is we have a series of drawings with drill hole layouts, that are suppose to be imported into Vulcan. Tried various DWG/DXF options to export. All the lines, text, co-ordinates come in perfect except these arrowheads. They are important as it explains which way a drill hole was made. When you click on a supposed arrow in Vulcan, it's only a line. Well you can distinguish what is suppose to be the leader, and what is the arrow head. Only there is no arrowhead, just a short line. Does that make sense? Basically does autocad store arrowheads in a way only it can easily understand? EDIT: Ok, I think I just read that they are stored as blocks. I then read this: "If you import a DXF or DWG file that contains a large number of blocks (more than 200), you are prompted to enable the Explode Blocks option. Explode the blocks to improve import performance." I'll have to give it a try tomorrow morning. Maybe I'm completely off track still...
  19. I am a fan of geometry. Mostly because of aiding my daughter (junior high school) to better understand geometry questions?! First I started with AutoCAD and draw the drawings of her problems. Drawing shapes precisely, helps a lot to solve the problem. Later I find out that it is hard for her use ACAD. Then I searched the Internet and find out that there are many software specially designed for this purpose. I choose a one-month free one, Cabri II Plus (http://www.cabri.com). It is simple, easy to use, but I figured out that it is not easy to draw with measurement (or at least I couldn't find) and it is a minus for that. You can see a screen shot in the attached photo. Now I have shift back to acad. In order to make it usable for my daughter, I want to define some macros, assign icons for them for drawing a triangle, median, angle bisector, ortholine, bisecting ortholine and many other things. For myself it is much easier to use ACAD for this purpose but It is not built for this purpose but I think as far as I know and satisfies me, there is no problem. On the other hand, other software are not this much accurate and takes time for me to master. But I think ACAD is not proper for school students. I think the solution lies on the magic of Macros and LISP routines. I am wondering how many college students uses ACAD for solving their geometry homework? Is there any site to give some addins or library of LISP codes for geometric drawings? I will be glad to hear your experience of using other software for geometric drawing purposes.
  20. In design offices, main goal of Autocad is for drawing and it is supposed to be the responsibility of drafters (at least in the past). However with this rapid speed of progress in design and drawing, it is hard to separate engineers and drafters responsibilities. I think they have to work in close collaboration with each other. Now CAD could be used as a design tool for engineers as well. I want to know your opinion in this regard. Do engineers in your work place (I mean design offices) uses Autocad or totally leave it to drafters? With this email I do not want to discriminate between drafters and engineers. Or I do not want to devalue drafters work. All I want to know is that how much of engineers are accustomed with Autocad?
  21. Has anyone had experience completing this action ?. Basically my boss once me two design in autocad ( blocks parts / assemblies ) then this to run / work directly with sage 200. I think we will have the BOM function within sage, but i'm just wondering how my block list will convert and run through sage ? Anyone who has/is already working like this out there ? If so, any pointers that we must watch out for when linking the two programs would be great.
  22. participating in this operation. Newer AEC Objects will be disallowed from participiting in this operation. This dialog pops up when I try to insert blocks from a Tool Palette Is there any way around this....I cannot figure it out...need some help
  23. Trying to run any visual lisp code in AutoCAD 2007, but end up in getting an error. ; error: ActiveX Server returned an error: Error loading type library/DLL Is it a virus which is causing problem ? Becuase on other PC with same AutoCAD 2007 I don't get above error.
  24. The first thing I think of is how much time I've wasted trying to bend AutoCAD 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2011 into doing what SolidWorks was born to do. The second thing I notice is the incredible, whopping, unbelievable speed increase of SW over AC (all versions), all other things left as equal as possible. The third thing I notice is 1/10th the memory consumed by SW vs AC (all other things left as equal as possible). Fourth, I'm blown away by the shocking speed of possible changes to the model. Fifth, I'm blown away by the dramatically increased interconnection and features - especially "Assemblies". I should go on but won't. When what took us two years to accomplish using AC was replaced --literally, and without exaggeration-- in two days in SW, that kind of difference is criminal. I wish we had found SW years ago. I'd be a younger man.
  25.
