  1. I have a strange problem with print/print preview. I create a 3d model in Autocad2012 for a mechanical assembly, then from the model I produce the 2d views I need. In addition to the 2d drawings I also create an Isometric DWF print. I then put all the 2d views together in 2d drawings, add the dwf as an underlay and then create a drawing layout in paper space. For ease I divide my layout into 3 view ports (three: left combination). The left viewport contains the 2d views, the right top port contains the DWF under lay (in colour - shaded) and the bottom view port contains text etc. the view port borders are set to a hidden layer so that they do not appear in the print. This has always worked fine but recently I have the problem that the Underlay, although visible in the layout, is not visible in the print preview. When I print the drawing it does however appears on the print. If I move the Underlay to the text view port it appears in the print preview. All properties for the 3 view ports are identical. So what has gone wrong? I must have changed a setting somewhere but just can’t seem to find the problem.
  2. Hi, As the title suggests i am having troubles plotting out of paper space. In my drawing i have an aerial photograph (inserted as a raster image) that has been scaled, rotated and shifted onto the relevant co-ordinate system. I have a locked viewport and when i zoom in or out the photo 'jumps' around in a random fashion, same when i hit plot preview it appears out of place. I was wondering what could be causing this because i thought that paper space was simply 'viewing' whatever was in model space not being physically able to shift objects. Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers Logan
  3. I am new in Inventor. I created a simple model. Then i tried to get a drawing of it. I can't get the axes orientation right. The model CreateDrawing Environment is rotated and i can't get it right in view. I mean when i create a base view , whatever view i choose the model looks rotated in the view. As you see from the picture that's not a "front view". I expect the "front view" to show me the model colored in red, nicely horizontal. How can i point to Inventor which view is what ? In CreateAssembly environment the model in "Home View" looks weird rotated too. I assume the problem starts from the CreateAssembly procedure, though i am not sure. Anyway, what can i do to fix that ? Thank you for your help.
  4. Hi All, Is there an way that I can get an new layer that I create to be frozen in all existing viewports on my drawing. I know you can freeze an newly created layer for all new viewports but that does not solve the fact that the new layer will show on all existing viewports. I had a look and is still without an awnser for my question. Thanks!!
  5. Another basic/noob question! Down in the bottom right hand corner of the main CAD window, next to where the little scale and annotation buttons are, there should be another little box with PAPER and MODEL for when you have viewports on. commonly used for when you are zoomed in on a viewport and working in it and need to swap to model to zoom out, so that you dont zoom out in the viewport ruining your scale and allignment etc. does anyone know how to get that little box back if it has vanished?? thanks guys!
  6. I'm the same guy who was having problems with my layer manager yesterday. Now I'm having a similar problem setting layers in various viewports. I set them (using VP freeze), they appear to be fine, I save, yada yada, but after a while all the layers turn back on within the viewports. Very frustrating. I am starting to think that there is a fundamental problem with my layers system- possibly having to do with my profile setting, but I don't know enough about setting and managing profiles to know where to start. Or it could be something else.
  7. Hi. I was up to 4am tryin to fathom this out and have deadlines looming. Despite having the manuals and other books I cant work out what settings I need. Simply put I want to draw some things that are about 1- 2m square and print on A1 at about 1:10. That feels like they should fit Ok. Now, what setting should I use? I worry I may have reset something my mistake. Can someone give m an idiots guide to how the page should be set up please? Drawing units are decimal- but should the block scaling box be m or mm [or does that not really matter unless I'm doing block scaling?] Do I draw in m or mm ? my drawing seem to be either too big or too small so when I open the view port and click 1:10 they are either HUGE or tiny. I know this isn't right and suspect it has something to do with Page Set Up Manager units in the model/paper space. Any pointers please? I'm doing a uni course and live 100 miles from campus and need to get this stuff printed by end of today. many thanks
  8. hello everyone i actually have the above views and a full front section done but now that i have done that when i try to use solview to make a full right side section it uses my most previous viewport and i was wondering if any one knew a command for command prompt th switched the vieports that yoou can enter in the command prompt i do have a shortcut using control plus something so a way to use ctrl in script would be handy as well thank you for the help
  9. i have one peice of property with an 50' easement going through the middle. I want to combine the two halves to make one property. But i want to omit the 50' easement. I also vaguely remember learning about some sort of text that is annotative and is only visible in certain views. I have an overall view that is 1"=1000' and the other views are 1"=100'. Its very similar to having two sets of text on different layers and different sizes (and just freezing out one or the other in the viewport.) but it is all done with a certain kind of text. Any thoughts?
  10. I just bought an HP 11x17 printer for my desk... I'm having several issues with plotting from paperspace - whats on my screen is not pritning out to scale 1- If I dimension my title block in CAD it measures to 16 3/16" wide but when I print it out it equals 16 7/16 2- I put my viewport scale to be 1/4"=1'-0" and when I go to plot I do NOT choose the "fit to print" but rather the default which is 1"=1'. I have tried both printing in extents and window and they are both offscale. I prefer the paperspace to plot from extents (I've looked for things in my paper space that would be outside my title block besides my corner notches which are in the 'defpoints' layer that would throw it off and theres nothing. Please help me with this headache! I've been working on CAD for 5 years and have never had this problem. Why isn't it printing to scale? Am I making my title block the wrong size? It is xref'd in from a different dwg but it drawn to 1'=1' in that drawing - Id be happy to send whomever the dwgs too... Also I have found this: If I print with borderless print settings I have less title block being cut off... BUT I changed that in the control panel>printers properties for that specific printer but it does not carry through when I go to plot from CAD... so I set up a temporary file (went into print pref from inside CAD) and it was fine (as in it fit the whole title block but still off scale juuust a little) but I don't want to have to go to print pref every single time I print... and besides that, its still off scale a little Help!
  11. Ladies/Gents, Looking for a bit of assistance to an odd occurence with one of my drawings. I have a room full of furniture that I want to show in 3D in the conceptual style from a few different views. I've set up a couple of viewports in paper space, then rotated my view to suit, went into the layer properties for each and turned off the 'walls' layer within the viewport - walls disappear in each viewport and I have what I want. Problem is, when I then save the drawing, the frozen layer reappears. Checking back into the layer manager, the 'walls' layer still says its frozen within the viewport, but I can cleary see it on my drawing... Any ideas on what might be happening? It's AutoCAD 2009 and I'm not using Xrefs. (It seems a similar problem can be sorted if its Xref's) Thanks for your help
  12. I have tried searching the forums to no avail. I am not a beginner when it comes to AutoCAD but I am self taught so it's entirely possible there are things I have missed that are basic and obvious to others. Is it possible to assign an entity or a block to multiple layers? For example I have a Fire Alarm layer showing smoke detectors and a Fire Alarm Panel but I would also like the Fire Alarm Panel to also show in my Small Power Viewport too. I don't want to see smoke detectors on my small Power so I can't just make the layer visible to that viewport. How do you guys handle such a situation? At present I tend to create a dedicated layer called "Small Power Fire" which is shown on both the Fire Alarm Viewport and the Small Power Viewport but this creates a lot of layers to maintain that contain one or two items. I realise I could copy the Fire Alarm Panel to the Small Power Layer but I don't like that idea because its means someone has to change two layers when repositioning or altering. Any suggestions? The ability to assign an entity or block to multiple layers would be fantastic and I can't believe it's not already an option. I am running AutoCAD 2008 at present.

    Viewports S.O.S.!

Hi, I was hoping someone could offer advice on setting up viewports in order to print. I understand that a viewport layer must be created to begin with but the steps following this are not clear to me. Thank you kindly, Emily
  14. I'm just learning the differences between model space and paper space, and I'm having trouble drawing something in model space that has the same scale as the template I set up in paperspace. I set up a dwt with my border and title block, used it to open a new drawing, and started drawing in model space like I'm supposed to. But now, even though the paper size is supposed to be the same for both drawings (I checked this in Page Setup Manager), my drawing is huge in model space and not nearly as big as it needs to be when I view it in paper space with my template around it. How can I get the scale of the drawing to be the same and plot preview the same in both model space and paper space? Does it have something to do with viewports?
  15. I looked around, and couldn't find anything that answered this question specifically. So here goes: I've got hidden viewports to show my 3D objects in. These objects require label text that I've created in paperspace to align with them. Is there any way to get the text to plot as solid instead of outlined from these viewports set to hidden? Thank you in advance!

    Lock/Unlock viewports tool

I'm using AutoCAD 2009LT on one computer on the office, the other person who does drawing here has a computer with AutoCAD 2007 on it. He saw the other day that I used the lock/unlock viewports tool which I've recently found near the annotation scaling tools on the bottom right of the 2009LT screen. He thought it was a handy tool, so we've been tyring to find it in his 2007, but can't seem to. Is it a new feature since then? Or are we just going round with our eyes closed? Thanks!

    Slow "laggy" viewports

Recently when setting up my layouts and adding the viewports etc I've found them very slow and difficult to work with on the layouts. They're not too bad to insert, but when I come to edit their size or move them to a new location on the layout they become very slow to use! Everything else on the layout is fine to use, quick as normal, and changing anything in the model space is quick as normal. It's just anything to do with re-arranging or editing the viewports themseleves that has become very slow (best way to describe it would be lag I suppose) lol. Have I changed something without realising which is making them slow? Im using AutoCAD LT and if you look at my computer specs, it's the work computer I'm having this issue on, not my home one. Thanks everyone
