Have you never used an image file for a material before? Just open your Material Editor and select on an unused material slot. Now click the little button next to "Diffuse". This will open the Map Browser. Double click on "Bitmap" and then browse for the image file you want to use. Once you select the image file, it will appear in the material slot. I managed to get a jepg in but it showed up as a square on the unused material then woudlnt me upload it into max.
