I've imported DWG files (or DXF?) directly into blender with varying levels of success. Anything with a separate texture should be on a separate layer.

 

It's not a bad deal, but wasn't good for what I was doing in terms of rendering with multiple visible light sources within the picture, but I can certainly see how it'd be useful for an outdoor site rendering.

 

You need a Blender extension script to import correctly though.. there's some issues using the one that comes with blender. Also, you MUST use the stated version of python with your installation, even though it isn't the latest/greatest version, or else your installation of blender will never be "happy".

Blender also supports .3ds import.

Doesn't sound too convincing so far. I had no time to install until now. I had to go snowboarding today, as we have great snow in the mountains. Sorry ;)
