Hello,

I am a civil engineering student and have worked a bit with autocad previously.

Is their anyone who could tell me which software is best for a structural Engineer, as i have a project to draw a conference centre?

I don't know whether i should use revit or autocad.

any advices please

You could do it in generic AutoCAD but I'd recommend looking at one of the AutoDesk vertical products like Civil3D for instance.

What program does your professor recommend? Wouldn't that be the best source of information for a student?

Dear JD Mather,

I have just graduated now, we learned Autocad at the second year which was a very basic course, they didn't teach us well. I will start my master course in structural Engineering soon and need to learn autocad in order to be ready for any design project.

Hi ReMark, thank for your advice but i want to work with only one program rather than different ones. I have already started with autocad but don't know whether it is easy for 3D drawings.

Hi all, thanks for your useful advices

I am still looking for more advices, and thought it will be easier to clarify what i'm looking for.

I want to be able to draw 3D drawings on one of autocad products, there are so many of them out there. All my design projects deal with comming up with design ideas to draw them either in 2D or 3D. any more advices please?

Dear JD Mather,

..... they didn't teach us well.

There was a bit of subtle sarcasm in my response. I kind of figured as much. Did you change schools, or are you going to pay more tuition to the same school? (less subtle sarcasm)

Students can download modern CAD programs for free from http://www.autodesk.com/edcommunity Since you don't have much invested in vanilla AutoCAD yet I think I might look at one of the verticals for civil/structural, but it sounds like you are going to have to teach yourself (with whatever on-line help you can get).

Start a project and post back whenever you run into trouble.

Should you decide to remain, for the time being, with AutoCAD take advantage of the Dynamic blocks for structural beams that you'll find on your Tool Palettes and look into the possibility of adding other structural shapes (again as Dynamic blocks) such as angles, channels and tube shapes. I think you might find some of these over at the AUGI website. There is a section for Dynamic Blocks uploaded by members for members.
