auto inserting part numbers

I have a quick question most likely with a simple answer, When dealing with parts in Autocad is there a way to insert my companies part numbers for the parts used? like say you have a 2" 90 (for plumbing) and our part number is 1234 is there anyway to have that part retain that part number forever, so I can put in a schedule table with that number showing.

If you make blocks with attributes, yes you can put in part numbers. Are we talking 2d or 3d, not that it matters, but 2d is easier obviously

There is more than one way to do it. I would suggest either creating a block for the part using the part name/number as the block name OR add an attribute to the block for the part name/number. This would make it available for attribute extraction.

so is there no way of adding this part number say to the part catalog editor.

Must be a package of pre-made parts that comes with MEP. Is that correct?

Yes, the mechanical parts library can be edited in 2007 and 2008 versions of the software.

The following procedures add a custom column called PN (Part Number) to the standard parts database:

  1. From the Content 3D menu, choose Parts Library to open the Standard Parts Database dialog box.
  2. On the left side of the dialog box, click on Standard Systems and expand the tree: Standard Systems > ANSI Standard System > Fasteners > Screws and Threaded Bolts > Hex Head Types > Socket Head Types.
  3. Select Hexagon Socket Head Cap Screw - UNC, and then right-click and choose Edit Value Table from the shortcut menu to open the Value Table Editor.
  4. Right-click on any column and choose Insert Columns from the shortcut menu to open the New Column dialog box.

OK this tells me what I need to do but I have a problem finding the first step??? any help on this or am I just lost.
