You can imagine what a problem AutoCAD's system variables can become in an educational setting. I wish they would make parts of the program unchangeable starting with a default user profile and default dimenion style.

The default dimension style could be handle via a template and cross-checked using the CHECKSTANDARDS command.

I would think a default user profile in an educational setting could be setup via the college's network.

One could always use Visual LISP to implement system variables, and user profiles by way of ACAD.lsp, and/or ACADDOC.lsp.

One could also maintain Application Icons with the use of the "Scripting.FileSystemObject" and "WScript.Shell" objects, searching through these directories for *.lnk files:

  • (strcat "C:\\Documents and Settings\\" (getvar 'loginname) "\\Desktop")
  • "C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Desktop"
  • (strcat "C:\\Documents and Settings\\" (getvar 'loginname) "\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Quick Launch")

... then modifying the Arguments property of each resultant Shortcut Object.

Hope this helps!
