I’m trying to create my first 3D visual using architectural plans.

I’m not sure what roof it’s called but I’ll upload the cad file tomorrow.

I found some really good tutorials for making 3D roofs on youtube. There are lots of ways of doing it. Some are easier than others. But if you have a look on youtube you'll probably find what you want.

The CAD file will be most helpful as the terminology may differ depending on what side of the pond one resides. We'll be looking for it.

Wow what type of roof is that called!?

Ok please see the attached cad file (zipped) - you will see my version of the roof although I'm not sure if that's the correct way to draw it.

Yeah that's my attempt but the roof covers the front wall of the house which it shouldn't.

Also I can't shell it as it says: modelling Operation Error: No solution for a vertex.

Well there is a less subtle way of doing it. Make a copy of the solid. Scale it to something like 98% of the original. Subtract one from the other. Do this with a copy of your original. Should look something like this as viewed from the underside.

Hi every one,

An other idea !

I had the same trouble in couple years and I noticed my model was create to far from origin and its units is millimeter.

To solve my problem I used scale command to change its scale and editing solid worked again.

So I do the same thing with your roof and shell works.

I found discussion about this problem in autodesk see link

I

I include your roof 1000 times as smal, in meter maybe it's a same problem in inch

good luck

Hi Remark,

In France, we work in meter in the construction of buildings and rarely otherwise.

For the exposed case, it was a plan of house drawn in the mm and geolocalisation with the site about X: 1500000 Y: 5200000 Z: 196000.

That's why I had the reflexe to make the same thing with the roof because I measured a door which mesuring 1200 drawing units.

And I don't change a position because the origin it was at the corner of house

Have a good day

I was also wondering how you would go about adding roof tiles to the roof I have drawn (please see attached cad file).

This would be for rendering purposes

Thanks

Re: roof tiles.

Did you want to do this as a material or did you want to physically construct the tiles as solids and place them on your roof?

Can both ways be used for rendered visuals?

Can't say for sure. I've yet to actually do anything with materials as my line of work does not require renderings.

What kind of tile roof did you have in mind? A Spanish tile?

I'd call that a slate roof not a tile roof. Slate roofs are flat like the roof in your image. A tile roof, as I know it, is a tapered curve. Maybe the fact that we are two countries separated by a common language might explain the difference.

Getting back to your tile roof I think this would be ideally suited to be handled as a material.
