Fatal Error when plotting

HI I am using AutoCad 2000 on Windows XP - and have had no problems for years. today - I went to print out a drawing, and when clicking on plot - or plot preview, it gave me: Fatal Error: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0000 Exception at 5e2c36h. I thought it was just this one file, but none of the existing drawings I open will print. And they have always printed. Has this happened to anyone else? And does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this? Thanks for your help.

I've been dealing with this same problem since yesterday. The only thing I know of that changed was a Windows update over the weekend. Working on Friday, not working on Monday.

BTW I'm running AutoCAD 2000 on Windows 7.

I have this same problem. Working on Friday, not working on Monday. I had another person in our office (a collective of sole proprietors) open my files on ACAD 2013, and it worked. So not a problem with my plot files or base files.

So far I have shut off computer, uninstalled and reinstalled ACAD 2000, tried looking into the styleeng.dll error that popped up from Adobe (the plotter I'm using), and installed an alternate PDF creator - pdf995 - all to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I may just have to migrate to ACAD 2013 but that requires playing musical laptops with an intern.

Just one of those 'gotchas' you're going to encounter from time to time when running older programs on Win7 or Win8.

Either of you have a Restore point that predates the weekend update?

See I would never consider an uninstall/reinstall until I exhausted ALL other options. That step should be reserved as "in case of an emergency" type response if you know what I mean. Why? Because in your case the problem may very well lie in the Win7 update and not in AutoCAD 2000 itself.

Thanks for all the posts - I tried to print from my cad at work today and the same thing happened. Same with one of the other guys in the office. He was going to re-install AutoCad on his computer. That styleeng.dll error popped up on the Avast antivirus on each computer - and it said it stopped it from loading (bad file?) and put it in the chest. I even did a virus scan on the computer - and nothing showed up. If it might be a "glitch" and the file is not corrupted, can it be recopied back into the AutoCad folder and restarted?

I tried re-installing ACAD and that didn't fix it. I tried a system restore to Friday afternoon and that didn't fix it. Now I've migrated to ACAD 2013, which was probably a necessary update anyway. With a deadline this week, I can't waste any more time on it. Anyone else found a solution?

Well, at the moment, I can't migrate to a newer version. So I am going to try and keep plugging away and see if I can get this to work again. If anyone finds a solution and fix, please let me know. Thanks for your help.

I'm a newbe to this site. But the same thing happened to me yesterday, on my desktop and my laptop. I figure it's got to be a virus or trojan. Ran avast and spybot. Uninstalled and reinstalled AutoCAD 2000. My son, closest thing to an expert who's free, ran an anti-malware program that he downloaded. Still no luck. If anyone finds something, YELL! I cannot plot, either to my printer or to a program I use to make .pdf copies for a computer-challanged client. I'm going to check at the local college tomorow. If that doesn't work, I'll have to go to a commercial place.

I don't think it is a virus or a trojan. I think something in the Windows Registry got changed. That's why uninstalling/reinstalling AutoCAD 2000 does not fix the problem.

Are any of you who are running AutoCAD 2000 doing any 3D work? Are any of you using commands found in Express Tools and/or custom lisp routines?

To reiterate, on Monday, Nov. 18, I tried to plot a drawing using AutoCAD 2000. Instead, I got an error window, saying, "FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0000 Exception at 5e2586h". This error comes up when I try to preview a plot, and also if I try to plot without previewing. I think the "0x0000" is common to all machines, and the "5e2586h" is specific to my machine. It comes up when plotting to my printer, and also when plotting to a .pdf file, using "CutePDF". I've been using "CutePDF" for about 2 years, to send drawings to a client who is computer-challanged. I have been using AutoCAD 2000 since it came out almost 14 years ago. I have been using 3D and custom lisp routines on it for most of that time. I ran Avast and Spybot to check trhe computer. Nothing. I unloaded and reloaded AutoCAD 2000. Still had the problem. Most virus checkers don't check for specialized viruses aimed at relatively obscure programs, like AutoCAD 2000. But, it seems to me that it is not coincidence that this happened to 3 other people the same day. That's why I think it's a virus.

Sorry, I'm not buying the theory that someone intentionally went through the trouble to specifically target a CAD program that was released 14 years ago. Something is at work here.

OK What? I don't really care what it is. I just need to get it fixed. Something is interfering with the plot command functioning. I do not know enough about AutoCAD programming to figure it out. My son thought it might be in the registry, but I haven't the vaguest idea how that would work or how to fix it. And, as I said, it popped up out of the clear blue sky, and it happened to 3 other people the same day. A time bomb hidden in the program for 14 years? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Hi again,

No, I do not have any service packs and updates. I checked with Autodesk online. First question: there are different downloads for "locked" and "unlocked". What's that? My machine sit's on my desk at home, all by itself. Does that mean it's "unlocked"? I'm picking up from context, maybe, that "locked"has to do with networked computers?

Your version is most likely unlocked unless you have a "dongle" at the back of your computer.

I find it difficult to believe that in all this time you never installed a service pack. You were never aware they existed?

Well if you want to give it a try you could utilize a Registry cleaner and see if that has any affect. Warning: make a backup of the Registry first in case things don't go as planned. You might also want to go online and learn how to replace a Registry.

Is all your work 2D? Do you make use of any lisp routines? Do you use any commands found in Express Tools? Yes, I do have a reason for asking. Indulge me please.

Thanx for answering so quickly. Here are the answers to your questions. No, I don't have a dongle. I know what it is, as I had one once for AutoCAD R12. I was never aware that there were service packs for AutoCAD 2000 until now. I'll check with my son to see about cleaning/replacing the registry; he knows more about that than I do. Most of my work is in 3D. I make some use of lisp routines. My favorite is one I wrote that puts the proper boundary labels on property maps, with the correct number of zeroes. (Some states require a double zero in the minute and second portions of angles, when it's an even degree, no minutes or seconds) If the boundary is a p-line, you just pick it, and it puts them all in. I make use of some of the Express Tools without even thinking about it; I have the buttons for them om screen the same as other buttons. It's been so long ago that I can't remember if the Express Tool buttons came with the program, or if I had to make them myself. I think a little bit of each. I still do a few maps and such, but as I said, most of my work is in 3D. I'm retired, but one client keeps coming back every year for the last 10 years. Wants me to design more machinery for him. So I put in 10 to 15 hours a week here at home. Plus, he pays very well, very promptly! I rambling; sorry bout that.
