jsmit35
In the attached drawing I'm trying to dimension the width. If you zoom in on the dimension already in place you can see that the dimension snapped onto the end and is not necessarily the furthest point on either end of the shape. Is there a trick to snap the dimension onto the furthest point? This is a recurring problem for me. In this case the object is drawn as a spline but more normally it is happening with normal arcs where it will snap to the end of the arc and not the furthest position that I'm looking for. Any ideas? dimension.dwg
RobDraw
If it were anything but a spline, it would be easy. The problem is the endpoint of the splines are not at the widest part. Here are a couple of options: Draw it so that the endpoints are at the widest part. Draw a line at the widest part and snap to the intersection. Then delete the line. jsmit35
I've attempted to do your second option of dimension-ing to the intersection, but my problem there is snapping the line to the widest point. Essentially the same problem just now trying to snap a line to the widest rather than a dimension.
jsmit35
what would be the easy option if it weren't a spline? Just for future problems.
RobDraw
If it were an arc or a polyline arc, you would have a quadrant snap. Are you using the drawing to determine the maximum width or is that predetermined (before drawing)?
jsmit35
Well in these cases, I don't know the width beforehand. I'm only adding dimensions to a drawing that has already been created.
RobDraw
Then I might go with the old adage. Garbage in, garbage out. start that line I talked about before by eyeing the first point using the "nearest" snap, then draw it to the other side. Snap you dimension to the first point and the intersection at the other side. I got 10.67.
jsmit35
I got the same, thanks for your help!
rkent
You can snap to the Center of the left arc, draw a line across to intersect with the spline. Dim to the intersection.
RobDraw
Yeah, that works but we were trying to get the width, not the length.
