neilew
I am trying to draw a staircase for a customer that has helical corners. I have drawn a 3d sketch of the center line of the stringer and am trying to sweep a 2d sketch along it to represent the stringer. When I try I get an error that reads "the attempted operation did not produce a meaningful result. try with different inputs." The sketch consists of about 6 straight lines, 2 bent lines, and 2 helix (90 degree). If I remove the last straight line and the last helix it works fine. If I draw those 2 entities in a separate sketch it also works fine. I can't figure out why it won't work as a complete sketch. any help would be greatly appreciated. shift1313
Is there a tangency on the last two segments? If not that might be it.
neilew
Someone else mentioned that but I'm not sure how to check it. The end of the 2nd to last straight line and the beginning/ctr point of the helix have the same x value so I would assume tangency. Maybe not if the last 2 straight lines are not 90 but I made the helix 90? Any more suggestions would be great

To apply it you would select the tangent constraint(circle with a line at about the 2 oclock position) and then select the two entities you want to constrain. You should be able to find it on the sketch tab. Do you know how to manually apply constraints? I don't currently have inventor or i would take a screen shot for you.
