Hi guys, happy new year:)

but with a new year comes new problems eh?:D

I have been given a new task and im unsure of how to correctly term it or start th task.

I have three versions of a model

1. The real photographic image

2. The 3ds max model

3. Another version of the model

What i want to do is to have the model in max and have it showing the real parts of the model and the other versions on different parts.

Like a cut section of the model, showing part model.part real version. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense but im having trouble.

In archeitectural deisgn they often do this technique to show the real building and the virtual design.

Can you post some examples of what you're trying to do. I'm a little confused? :?

I think I understand...You're trying to use the real images as the background for a render of the model and have the two parts mesh. For instance if you're rendering the kitchen, having the real dinig room photo visible through the doorway, yes?

Unfortunately I know nil about 3dmax, but maybe this will get another answer in here.

cad64- i unfortunately cannot place images of my work on due some of the work not allowed to the general public.

maxwell edision- yes you are on the right track my friend.

Think of a model in max

half a max model and half a real photographic image, thats what im trying to acheive.

Except of course that i want to be able to orbit around this object, so the real photographic image must be wrapped around the model so it too seems 3d.

typically this is done post rendering in a program like photoshop using masks, blend mode etc...

If you want it to move, you'd have to treat it like they do in a movie, your model's camera path must match the path of a video taken of the actual item/room, and then merged with a program like Adobe's After Effects or something similar. There may be software which will help align "markers" to sync the two up, but this probably isn't the place to find that info.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of an example that someone else has done. Like maybe some images from the internet that are similar to what you're trying to achieve.

Just create a cylinder around your model, delete the top and bottom faces and then flip the cylindrical faces so they face inward, towards the model. Make sure your "Backface Cull" is enabled, so you can see through the cylinder from the backside. Now apply your photographic image to the cylinder. You will have to play with the scale and tiling to get it just right. You will also need to have a full 360 degree panorama photo to make this work.
