Forcing layer state onto a revised xref with different name

Head spin this one.

we have various child drawings that have their own layer/colour/linetype settings etc and get issued as individual drawings.

we have a parent drawing that has child drawings xrefd in but the child drawings have their (xref layer) colour/linetype settings changed within this drawing and get issued out. Great

 

if a child drawing gets revised and as such becomes child_RevA when we xref it into parent drawing (detach 'child' xref 'Child_RevA') those layers revert to it's child linetypes etc 

 

is there a way to force the layer state from child to the new child_RevA

 

it's been so long since doing this i can't remember
