Select Object, Press Esc and it's still selected

This brand new computer with ACAD 2019 on it is doing something I can't figure out. After working on a drawing for a couple of hours it stops allowing me to select things easily or not at all. I select something and the grips come around it but then when I press Esc it keeps the grips instead of letting go of it. Then when I right click on a block and try to select the block editor from the pull-down menu it prompts me to enter the name of the block to edit instead of going straight to the block editor with that block open ???

 

When I close the drawing file and reopen it, it starts working again.... ???
