I've used the planar projection method and it has worked except it has mirrored the image in both hemispheres so I have two maps on one sphere, half the size they should be. Tile horizontal and vertical is switched off. You're going to need a different type of image that can be used with spherical mapping. Below is one I just found and it works pretty well. I went ahead and applied it to a sphere, using spherical mapping, and then played with the position and scaling to get it to line up correctly.
