Hi folks,

I got a severe problem. I'm using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2007.

A drawing contained several layers, some of them locked, others de-activated during ongoing works. I wanted to edit a block used in the drawings. I selected the block and opened the block editor. After deleting some elements of the block, I had to explode a couple of elements from the block to delete further details. I selected all the remaining ones. Than I hit the toolbar button MAKE BLOCK, next I closed the block editor.

Now all of the model space appears empty except of the ONE block I edited, everything else disappeared. How can I undo the changes and bring the proper drawing back?

I tried the procedure on an earlier version - minor changes don't cause any harm to the file. But once I exploded parts of the block during editing, the error appears. When I lock up the block list, the edited one shows a sign saying "Dynamic Block" which may be the root of all evil (as the unknown is always the evil).

Who can give me an idea how to recover my drawing? Getting the backup from tape takes ages, deadline is close, I feel a bit like Damokles.

Cheers from Melbourne

I did some more testing and the problem appears every time when trying to explode parts of a block in the block editor and then saving it. scribble some lines in an empty model space. Define a block of more than 1 line, add some lines, define as a second block. Then edit this one - you can't delete parts of the initial block without exploding the stuff. Save it then and see what happens...

When I open my drawing, AutoCAD states that the drawing contains "authoring elements" and asks if they are to be opened in the block editor. Once I do this, the command line shows the following commands:

Command: -BEDIT

Name of block or [?] : *Model_Space

Why is the model space suddenly to be treated as a block?

Hope that someone can help me out...

It sounds too complicated understand fully from your description & there are many factors in this where the error could be occuring... any chance you could post it on here or is it too big?

As the hedgehog has said, far too complicated to guess at without the file but Model_Space has not suddenly become a block - it always has been. What is new is your ability to list it. Paper Space & Model Space have always been available as blocks from with VBA.

I have just had the exact same experience with autocad 2012LT. ARGHHHHHHH!

I was editing a block and walked away from my machine, came back and saved and closed the file without closing the block editor. I reopened the file and it opened up inside the block itself, not the whole model. Now I can't get out of the block!

I tried inserting the file into a new one and nothing came through apart from the bock so that is that unless someone else can offer insight.

The nasty thing is that as the drawing saved and closed my temp file disappeared at the same time! The previous file version was overwritten at the same time too.

I have yesterdays back up, which is nice but not particularly useful with a tender to get out tomorrow and consultants waiting on the drawings... now 6 hours delayed. Presumably this is one of those things early adopters get to enjoy.... whinge over.
