I have bought a couple of Authorized Training Courseware from Autodesk. Go here: http://www.adskconsulting.com/courseware/cat/ad_courseware_cat.php
Pick AutoCAD MEP from the Dropdown menu and select which trade you will be needing. Very informative books. :)

Can you get these cheaper any where, or in PDF?

Not that I know of. Trust me they're worth the money if you're starting out.
Other than that, just monkey around with the program via tutorials online and what not. It takes time to learn MEP that's for sure. :)

We dont use it at our company (of 3 weeks) im getting more involved with the engineering side of things now instead of doing just CAD, (got no engineering quals) but will be working close with Mech designers, and want them to get onto MEP in the future - so want to get good/ok at it
what are in the books? are they like step by step? and tell you how to draw things etc...

Yeah one of them gives you a step by step run through for every trade involved in the program, plus all the extras like Layer Key Styles, Property Sets, Dynamic Scheduling, etc. It's what gave me the boost to get going. Once I did it, MEP became logical to me and I started figuring things out on my own. :)

Is MEP still good to use in 2D? I want to use MEP the next time I have to do a Ducting drawings. But i want to get into doing 3d boiler/plant rooms, as im working on alot of them at the minute and i think the engineer i work for would like to see what I could do instead of 2d schematics

There's a learning curve, but yeah it produces EXCELLENT 2D plans, especially when you start understanding the architecture of the program. That's why at my company, AutoCAD MEP has priority over using Revit because we are not only an engineering firm, we also are a construction company so our prints need to be "field friendly" for our guys to install it. AutoCAD MEP does very well in this department, and once you get fast at it you can REALLY pump out some plans, especially when coordinating with elevation issues. :)

Think im going to get the HVAC one and have a play, I tried to have a go at a tutorial on Youtube, but i wasnt doing something right? and couldnt see the video proper (well what it was showing what to do)
Are you in the building services field?
StykFacE

Yeah, we do HVAC, Piping, and some plumbing. We are an engineering firm as well as a construction company, so I do it all. Plus I started in the field right outta high school so I have 3.5 years of field experience, which gives me a bit of an edge when designing. :)

Here's a quick vid of the HVAC runouts in action. Notice it produces a 2D plan view and builds a 3D model at the same time. :)

You know, there are user guides to help you. Do you have a copy of AutoCAD MEP 2010 installed? They are installed on the machine withing the installation directory. If not then I can upload mine for you. They go over basically everything, but they just don't do it in a "tutorial learning" way. But it's the same content, really.

go to my site: http://www.tannarzane.com/
click on Files.
Your info:
Username: nick
Password: cadtutor
Grab all the ones you want. I'll leave them up for 48 hours then I'll destroy the files and permission.
*EDIT* And yes, AutoCAD Architecture is installed with MEP so you get the Architecture profile with all the tools as well. :)

type MVPARTADD to bring up the Parts Catalog.
A note of advice.... the stock catalog is not that great, but use it for now to get familiar with out things work. I would recommend you using AutoCAD MEP as a drafting tool at first, just to get use to the functionality. It will take awhile for you to get the hang of it, and I will always be here to help. Glad to see you making the transition though. It'll come in REALLY handy one day when it all comes together. 8)

yeah, definitely not gonna have that part. That's an extremely customized part. The only things you'll see in the catalog are strictly "general parts" only. Never use them unless it's a very simple plan layout. Always use cut sheets direct from the manufacturer when you start creating your own MvParts catalog.
Here's some good videos and links for AutoCAD MEP: http://www.youtube.com/user/AutodeskMEPTechs
And here's a good site from a guy who REALLY knows his stuff: (on the right side of his page, click "How To" for some tutorials) http://www.geniusoftllc.com/

StykFacE,
I am working for a Plumbing Company. My manager try to figure out which software to buy ...so he comes me, then I think I shall ask you first....Haha..
We just need the software to do Coordination drawing, Sprinkler pipe prefabricating..The Architec usually gives us set of drawings, then I have work with the other trades to coordinate it (the 2D Plan -Coordination drawing comes out very mess,)
so, I need some advices on these options: quickpen, cadpipe, cadduct or mep?
If I have MEP, shall the other trades get the MEP too?
When you use MEP to draw... Does the Architec provide you the 2D or 3D drawing? When you use MEP in an 2D drawing, so, what is going to be shown on 3D?
There are no 3D plumbing in MEP, how do you deal with the Pitch of Drain waste line? so Is it possible to do a clash check on PLumbing line? (Shall I get a software with 3D plumbing ?)

Well, I don't know much about plumbing and sprinkler pipe programs. I know that AutoCAD MEP is probably not going to be your first choice, since it's geared more for Mechanical HVAC Duct, Mechanical Piping, and Electrical. I'll give a sub-contractor a call that I have done 3D BIM drawings with before who does fire protection and see what he uses, I can't remember at the moment.
If I have MEP, shall the other trades get the MEP too?
No, they do not need the exact same program. Usually in this industry, the General Contractor uses Autodesk Navisworks to import all trades into for collaboration. :)
When you use MEP to draw... Does the Architect provide you the 2D or 3D drawing? When you use MEP in an 2D drawing, so, what is going to be shown on 3D?
Most of the time I get 2D drawings in, but I still use AutoCAD MEP and the 3D tools to run my application because it's faster than doing work in 2D. It still represents everything in a 2D plan view for plotting onto construction documents, and if I get something in 3D, well even better. Hope this helps some. :)

It's been four years since this thread was started. If the person who did so still hasn't figured out MEP maybe he should consider a career change. May I suggest accounting?

WoW, hi everyone , it's been 4 years already since I visited this site! I'm still using autoCAD 2008. Dell Optiplex Gx620, Pentium D cpu, and window XP. Our office server's 80Gb Hard drive still has 15Gb free.
