extrude help

Hi guys when i try to extrude now in max, i pull the mouse a fair distance but only get a tiny little bit of extrusion. Any ideas on this?

enter a distance for the extrusion in the modifier section

Yes thats what iv been doing but I prefer just to drag it to the distance i require, its quicker.

This usually works but recently it hasnt.

I'm not sure what would cause this?
Does this happen in every file or just one?
