does anyone know of any good tutorials for lighting a scene in 3d max or rendering?

There are tons of free Max tutorials online. Just do a Google search. Or, if you are looking to purchase some DVD training videos, let me know and I can recommend some good ones.

What version you used?In 3ds max design 2009,you can see good tutorials for day light and night lighting for exterior then next can see day and night lighting of interior scene.
