I'm using 2009 on both versions.
Currently I'm Exporting my Civil 3D surface to an AutoCAD dwg & then going from there. Is there another way? Also same question but for other Civil 3D entities i.e road design.

 What exactly is the question?
Are you asking how to export from Civil 3D?
How does Max factor into the equation?
Maybe this question belongs in the Civl 3D section?

I want to export from Civil 3D to Max
and I'm wondering what is the most efficient method.
and also, I wouldn't mind knowing if you can link a Civil 3D file to MAX so it's used kinda like an XREF, so if say a road was amended, then it would auto update in Max.
Still not sure how I want to play it yet exactly.

You can use the "File Link Manager" in Max, (File Menu > File Link Manager), to import the .dwg. This is similar to xreffing in Autocad, and any changes made in Civil 3D will then auto-update Max.

Ah ok, think I was being an idiot, I thought you had to export it as a different file type and then re-import it, will try directly importing it.
Cheers mate
