Can using edit xref in place corrupt a project?

I had been working on a project (started by others) which was using several different xref's one of which consisted of about 15 aerial images. Upon which line work xref's were overlaid.

Many problems were encountered during this project including:
Painfully slow regeneration of aerials,
Problems with aerials showing only in part when making PDF's,
AutoCADD error - Shutting down when attempting to make PDF's.

I was told that my use of "edit xref in place", (when a change to an xref concerning the line work which was overlaid) had corrupted the project and made it "glitchy".
I was told I am not to use "edit xref in place" any more. Ever.

I have worked with AutoCADD for over 7 years and never had any problems using this command.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I have never in my entire career heard of this being an issue. It sounds to me like a memory issue. With that much imagery in use within a .dwg I'm pretty sure memory, or the lack thereof, is the problem.

What are your computer specs?

As a matter of fact, in the three months I've been there I have had numerous problems with the computer.
It has gone to (Windows) blue screen several times, as well as had AutoCADD errors closing the program.
The programs have been taken off and reinstalled in an attempt to rectify these problems. I have had no problems to speak of as long as I'm not working on the project containing aerials.
I do not know the specs for that computer off the top of my head, however, I will post that info. as soon as possible.

As much as I hate to regurgitate the same s**t, 90% of my problems with acad2008 end up resolved with the following macro:

^C^C-purge;r;*;n;-scalelistedit;r;y;e;-purge;a;*;n;

the poor propagation of regapps, and an overabundance of scalelists seem to be a huge burden on the continuity of cad files on very large projects especially; (I'm involved in a very large hole in downtown manhattan).
set up a custom button running the above macro and let me know if it helps. Seems to be a big problem when others are using revit and/or Microstation.

I will ask if I may try out this macro upon returning to work Monday.

The "office" now seems to think it must be a faulty video card on the machine I use causing the problems.
No further mention of my use of "edit xref in place" has been made.
Frustration and the need to lay blame were the catalyst and the new hire is an easy scapegoat I suppose.
(It s_cks all the same.)

The specs for that machine are as follows:
Dell Precision T 3400
Intel Core 2Duo CPU
E6850@ 3.00GHs
2.99 GHz, 3.25 GB of RAM
Windows XP Pro. 2002
Service Pack 2

Keep in mind that having 15 aerials in and of itself can burden a computers memory and video card. My computer specs are somewhat similar to yours (I have the same brand and model in fact) and I experience some slowdown (mostly choppy panning/zooming) with the computer when I have multiple aerials. I attribute it mostly to the video card in my case.

It may not hurt to run a spyware/adware checker and a defrag utility (I use Auslogics Disk Defrag) as well.

If your firm is touchy about modifying toolbars etc. I wouldn't bother asking...
just run the following in the command line:
-purge
reggaps
*
no

then:
-scalelistedit
reset
yes
exit


Asking to use an autocad function makes as much sense as a bus driver asking to use the left turn signal. :-)

I had an issue with this a while back, and solved it by making a custom pc3 with the dpi reduced from 300 to 144. I found that files over 15Mb (I was using high quality georeferenced arial tiffs) would plot only partial linework or images.

this is very useful. it helped me clearing the annoying scale list in my drawings.
I am just concerned about the purge-reggaps, becuase it is deleting some of the things which i don't know anything about. I hope it is not deleting something which effects the drawings
