As the title says,

I have a model which has came over from invenntor in a single piece(attached if you will) and I need to colour certain parts a different colour from the rest.

Is this possible to do?

Or

Is it possible to un-attach an object? Split it up into user-defined regions?

cheers

Which tool did you use?
I was going to suggest using a Multi/Sub-Object (http://www.pixel2life.com/publish/tutorials/51/using_multi_sub_object_materials_in_3ds_max_6/) material.

I deattached the faces using the face select in editable mesh. Then selected the de-attached parts and coloured them separately.

I really like the method that you advised though, I shall try that later today!
