I have created a hatch, but when I go to it's properties, it does not display its area. What am I doing wrong?

thanks.

Do the boundaries contain Z coordinates?

I think you need to check the properties of the boundary you (hopefully) hatched to, not the hatch iteslf.

Did you hatch an object or pick points?

I always prefer to draw a boundary or polyline and hatch that, its invaluable when the client changes the design and things move. With a polyline and hatched objects the hatch can be stretched / updated to the new polyline profile - Its also useful for checking areas! - sorry.

Try turning off the hatch layer and drawing a polyline or using the boundary command to create the boundary, then list the properties of that.

Double click your hatch to bring up the hatch properties window. Select recreate booundary. (Select polyline) Then you can find your area of the boundary.

Do the items your drawing have any depth, i.e are they 3D? If true I believe there can be some issues with hatching. Although, quite possibly not.

I find the drawing a boundary approach to be unnecessary in most cases, though. I pick a point and then recreate the boundary using hatch edit and then amend the associated boundary it created for me.

Hope this helps.

If hatch boundary polyline has any overlapping portions on the interior, no matter how small, you can create a hatch but area wil not display.

good tip.

With this in mind I would suggest the OP just use hatch edit to recreate the boundary and take the area from that polyline.
