hi,

i'm tidying up a few drawings - i have an old layer i want to purge, i've tracked it down to being part of a block and the rogue layer is somehow embedded in the block.

it's called E674G4-FA and the block is of a smoke detector.

i'm basically trying to put all the smoke detectors on their own layer -SMOKE_DETECTORS

i used REFEDIT - with the layer set on SMOKE_DETECTORS and when selecting all 3 parts of the block switched them to the new layer.

when saving the block and coming out of refedit i picked the block again and it still showed being on layer E674G4-FA.

so, i selected the block and just changed it to the SMOKE_DETECTORS layer.

but, i still can't purge the layer. it shows up on the Layer Manager but not in Purge

If you are absolutetly sure that nothing is on layer E67yada-yada you can use the LAYDEL command to delete the layer - but be careful, if something is still on the layer, the layer will still be deleted!

Otherwise I'd say, can you use Purge while in REFEDIT?

Hi,

try going back into refedit and erase>all>re(move)>and select the three items forming the block.

If that doesn't work post a copy of the block so I can have a look.

not really. you won't "release" the layer until you redefine the block - as you exit refedit.

The problem is caused because the block was created using it's own individual layers (as opposed to just on layer 0). Therefore, when the block is inserted, these layers are created (whether or not the are actually used again is irrelevant - they are still created as a reference to the block). So even when you change your layers as you described the 'reference' to your original block definition still remains. That is why the layer is still showing in the layer dialogue box. However, if you changed your layers correctly, you should be able to delete the layer E674G4-FA from the layer dialogue box (as opposed to using purge). That should clean it up for you.
