View Full Version : Sheet doesn't appear the same as View does

I'm the guinea pig for Architecture 2009 in our office. Trying to get us out of the stone ages. So far drawing using objects has been going pretty well and I've overcome most problems without too much difficulty. This one, however, has me stumped.

Since we're going vertical I figured it'd be best to go all out and use the full project manager with views and sheets. I have a problem where something that appears fine in the construct, and looks like i want it to in the view drawing, doesn't appear the same when inserted into a sheet. As shown below, the stairs going down disappear and the sill outside the sliding doors is also gone.

Can anyone explain why this might be?

This is Post # 11 because I'm confused with your posting strategy...

In reference to your actual question, is it possibly something to do with your Cut Plane height, or object visibility in your Display Configuration?

the only way i can see it being a cut plane issue is if there is a lower limit cut plane. where do you modify cut plane height?

both sets of stairs should have identical settings in the display configuration, so i can't see why one would show up, but not the other. also, in the sheet layout as well as the view drawing i all object are linked as one xref so i can't modify object properties individually. if it appears in the view drawing, why would it look any different in the sheet drawing if it's referencing the same objects?

to explain the posting strategy... i tried to post the image links in my initial post, but the forum won't let members with less than 9 posts post links (to avoid spam bots that register just to post a spam link to another site)

Ah, I see. About the posts that is.

You can find the cut plane one the bar below your Layout Tabs, directly below your drawing space. If it is not visible, click the dropdown arrow on the right side. If you have a second set that are visible I'd select them both to make sure all properties information is similar. Perhaps one snapped to a bad insertion point and is actually perched in your attic.

got the stairs to appear!

finally found the cut plane... had to switch into model space.

cut plane in the sheet drawing was set to 3'6", with "display below range" set to zero. As soon as I set the "display below range" to something like -2' the lower flight of stairs appeared.

still no luck getting the sill of the doors to appear.

Whats the object display of that door style look like? Or are there other doors of the same type displaying?

it has to be something regarding the display settings for the threshold. any ideas?

Have you gone into the style manager and had a look at the missing component's object display settings itself?

this is so frustrating. i hate having to manipulate object display is three different drawings hoping that something i do will fix it.

can someone give me a breakdown of how object display inherits across drawings? with construct, view and sheet i have the original, then the original xref'd into a view, then that view xref'd into the sheet.

if i change object display in the construct is it inherited through, or do i need to recreate the view drawing to have it update?

the component is there, but only the sill isn't showing. i can't manipulate the object display directly because the object is embedded in an xref.

i have to take lunch. i'll be back.

You X-Ref'ed your door? Well I'd have a look in the source file then.

no, the door is an object in the construct drawing file. it appears fine there though. it even appears fine in the view drawing where the construct drawing is an xref. it only appears screwed up in the sheet drawing, which contains and xref of the view drawing.

this is apparently how autodesk wants us to work, but it strikes me as needlessly complicated.

I'll be honest, I don't use the project or content manager or any of that new fangled stuff. To me it offers nothing over a properly organized block library, and it feels slower to boot. I'm sure it has its uses for some, just not me.

Try saving a duplicate copy of the file and bind that XRef to it. If it still doesn't show, try exploding the newly created block. At the least lets try to isolate the problem.

what's another way to work with a multi level drawing that uses aec objects? is it possible to build the entire model in a single file, rather than having separate drawings for each floor? i'm completely new to this and yet find myself determining the future standard of our office based on what i find that works. this construct/view/sheet bs doesn't seem to be it.

Your frustration is almost palpable. We create our entire drawing in the same file, but we also use an add-on which is fairly specific to our industry (log homes) That add-on allows us to group objects so we can easily turn then on and off in each viewport. That can be done by smart handling of the Layer Manager as well. Maybe someone else here has more experience doing multilevel structures in ADT.

(As a side note, I believe the Project Center nonsense was implemented for large scale structures, Apartment buildings and the like. So it may not have been intended for more typical residential structures. I have no proof of this however)

ok, i think i see how i can make all this work. back to the drawing board, as it were. going to pull everything into one drawing (which will make the old school guy here VERY happy) and use creative use of the elevation setting (which i just discovered) to make everything go into the right place. That, combined with the cut plane option (thank you for pointing that out) should allow us to work with this much more like we currently are, but with fancy objects.

*fingers crossed*

no, none of that works without eliminating our ability to include 2d linework in the drawings.

i have to figure out this damn threshold problem.

MaxwellEdison

2D Linework can still be controlled with the layer manager. Set up your template with your necessary viewports, activate them and freeze those layers which you don't want to display. Or consider moving some of your linework, especially dimensions or callouts to paperspace on an annotation layer.

But why not attempt closure for others searching for solutions.

The solution to your sill display may be in the wall display configuration not the actual display configuration of the object. I just struggled with this on a window. Edit the wall style, override the plan view and go to the "other" tab. Check the "do true cut" button. OK out and save and reload.
