Can attributes only be attached to blocks?

or can someone explain attributes to me. I don't understand how it can be beneficial if we can only attach them to blocks?

Let me explain my problem. I'm working on a map of my campus, my boss wants me to attach attributes to turf areas on campus. He wants to take the closed polygons and put attributes on them.

Attributes are used to attach information to geometry. This information can be used for a variety of purposes like creating bills of materials or the information can be exported to other programs e.g. MS Excel. You can read about them in help or search on the internet for a tutorial.

Sounds good, thanks! Yeah I read about it more after I posted my question. So attributes isn't what I'm really looking for. Is there something I can do on AutoCAD that is similar to attributes, but its more like something CAD can calculate like area, or perimeter. Like that? I know I can use the area command to find the area, but it's only displayed in the command bar. Is there something I can do to display it permanently on the screen or at least temporarily when I click on the area? Without inputting the data manually of course.
