Can't attach material to Ductwork

I have some ductwork, I have attached a material to the layer, most of the ductwork loks fine but where ever there is a transition/reducer it stays the layer colour, anybody got any ideas to this?

I have assigned a material to the layer, but the transition does not adopt the material, just stays with the layter colour, please please please someone help me :-)

i had this problem as well, i just exploded the trans - which then allows you to add the material required.
