Can't use short commands anymore

Previously I could type "co" in command console, click an object and it would copy it. Now I must type co then select the object again. I.e. if I highlighted 10 and selected co it used to copy them, whereas now i have to reselect all 10 again.

I used to also be able to select something, press the delete key and it would delete. This no longer works. How do I go back to what setting I had?

Have you tried to set the system variable PICKFIRST to 1 :)
