i've got this problem with a coil, i need to make one for the machine im drawing, but i cant seem to get a coil in the right place.

So ive decided to make an adaptive one, after looking at some tutorials i decided idd give it a try, it wouldnt work:( .

I got the book and made 1 step by step, and it dint work:? !!!
i cant seem to figure out what im doing wrong,
am i retarded or is inventor just playing its trick on me
here's a zip of what i got so far

sorry i cant open your zip because i only have inventor 11 at work. What is your coil producing? what is the profile you are selecting for it? you should draw the cross section of your coil and a direction vector. you can select x, y or z if you expand your origin folder in your model tree. Here are a few screen shots i just did in inv11

If you are trying to draw a coil, lets say between spring perches, draw your coil with a perpendicuar plane to your base perch and draw a 3d sketch line from your bottom perch to your top perch. You need to have unconsumed visible sketches for this. In the coil dialog box there are different options for length, twists, pitch, taper etc.

The adaptive coil will be used as a spring ..

sorry i havent created an adaptive spring, but i have used springs in the dynamic simulation. You simply select a start and end point and describe the spring(coil dia, turns, spring rate etc) and can be used as a spring, damper or both.

hopefully someone with adaptive experience can chime in.

its odd, i can make a hole adaptive without a book, but the spring seems to be to hard :S. ive got a teacher who gives inventor courses even he didnt know how to do it :(

since im here anyways, would you know how the function Autolimits works ? its supposed to stop stuff from crossing one another right ?

i have never been able to get it to work. ive set limits before but nothing seems to happen. i almost think that it throws up a marker in the dynamic plot saying it has passed the limit, but ive never been able to get a "stop" to work. I only was able to play with inventor 09 for about a week before it stopped working:) im waiting for the autodesk student community for a serial number so i can use it again. sorry.

if anyone would know its jdmathers.

ive got the problem solved by giving a parameter to the Pitch of the coil, incresing the paramater makes the coil (Spring) stretch.

But i stil havent found any way of actually making an adaptive one :( .. maybe JD mather knows ?

I noticed on your Veer2 part that the circle is close to the origin but not constrained to the origin.

Have you gone through this document?

Also from the iProperties it doesn't appear that you are on Service Pack 1?

do these things actually matter ???
but anyways:P i never constrain my things to my origen, never thought id would be like, usefull ^^, .. anyways, can u draw the same coil ( spring) as i did, and make it a working one :P ??

owh ^^, and ill start constraining to my origen from now on :D

thanks

I would not make a point of it if it didn't matter to me.
I won't help anyone who doesn't.
Perhaps someone else will come along and offer their assistance.

Just read this now...and gotta admit using the origin point for reference from the start of all my work, is one of the best tips i have been given.
