Tiger Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 From time to time I get files that are done in MagicCAD that I need to incorporate into my normal AutoCAD-files (using 2008 ). The problem is that there's a whole lot of Proxy-objects that are used in MagicCAD that in general mess things up for me. Like when I try to copy or insert the MagicCAD file as a block and everything disappears. Or that the seemingly lines (they are some kind of MagicCAD object) have Z-heights that I really don't want. So here's the questions: anyone know of a simple way to convert everything in a MAgicCAD file to normal lines and arcs and whatnots? Does anyone know if you from inside MagicCAD can convert the file to normal AutoCAD file with just lines and arcs and whatnots? Quote
fuccaro Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 CAD software use to offer output in DXF format. If you "dxfout" from "other-CAD" and import in AutoCAD probable that will solve a lot of problems; since dxf has limited support for "foreigin" objects, a well written export routine will convert them into lines and arcs and so. Just my thoughts. Quote
Tiger Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 That sound like a good idea, thanks Fuccaro - it's easy to save the file as a dxf so that might be the way to go. When you say 'a well written export routine' you are talking about a hand-written routine right? I'll recommend my collegues to ask for a simple save-as-dxf first, if the problem persist I know what to look for next Quote
fuccaro Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I meant the "other" CAD program's built-in export routine. It should be a program created and tested by professionals, so probable it can convert to DXF all the entities created by that software. Quote
Tiger Posted April 22, 2009 Author Posted April 22, 2009 Ok then. I passed on the tip to ask for a DXF instead of a DWG next time, hopefully that'll do the trick. The funny thing is, I had this problem a while ago. When I say I, I mean a co-worker of mine - but stuff like these tend to become my problem. Anyway, then I figured out that I could Explode the MagicCAD (which does HVAC-stuff btw, if someone's wondering) objects and get just lines, and while these reverted back when I saved the drawing, I could take a copy of the lines that I could use. But this time, I couldn't do it like that on my co-workers computer - but I could do it on mine AutoCAD is a strange creature.... Quote
fuccaro Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 AutoCAD is a strange creature....Ha ha! I like it, nice one. Nothing is stranger as AutoCAD. Maybe only the people using it! Quote
Tankman Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 AutoCAD is a strange creature.... AutoCAD is exactly strange! A great tool for all in the forums! "Of course it is only the people using it!", as fuccaro stated. Quote
