I have being trying to draw a line over an existing shape but says it would snap but when clicked it places it somewhere else. i have osnap on and is showing. i have restarted cad which normally fixes it but not this time any ideas.

Have you checked the snap increment?

Maybe I misunderstood your question as I thought you might be using SNAP settings. I guess you're not.

What OSnaps do you have enabled at the moment?

Re: SNAP.

Open your Help file and on the Index tab type in the words SNAP command. The window on the right should open to the Quick Reference tab. Click on the Concept tab. Read what it says about SNAP Mode.

If two oSnaps are close together, then the line may snap to the other oSnap.

I think you can cycle through the oSnaps available on an object by hitting tab.

Following along the line of what Lee Mac just posted you may have to zoom in a little tighter when you make your pick. Is there area you are picking in rather "busy"?

if i am doing it right all options are selected

Maybe your picking in an area that is so congested that with all options enabled AutoCAD is having a difficult time picking the one you specifically want. Like I said, zoom in a little closer.

it pulls the line into random places cutting across a shape but the snap point comes up and you click and it does this

Try reducing the number of snaps in the Osnap settings (still leaving the snap you want), and see if it makes a difference.

Are you sure you didn't inadvertently turn on snaps? Use the Snap Mode button at the bottom of your display to turn it on/off.
