Ok the IT guys here at work moved where autocad puts the bak files, in a folder on our C drive. Is there a way to let autocad write to that location but not overwrite bak files? so it just keeps adding to them? Anyone? IT dept says no.... i doubt that.....there has got to be a way.

I don't know an automatic method, but you can start the save command and save to that location with a unique name.

Could I ask what you do with so many bak files? I am asking because I haven't made bak files for 10 years.

Why dont you make bak files?

See the other day i made a ton of layers for objects i would switch later, then not thinking, im so used to cleaning drawings up i did a purge and lost all of the layers i had created, im thinking if everytime i save it makes the bak file i can have backups of the same drawing at different intervals. Id get all my layers back.... I have used bak files a handful of times and has saved me time redoing things. Im messing with the security of the folder, and i can change it so i cant delete stuff, but im not seeing an option like what i want.... grrr...

Frequently make *.bak files, frequently clean 'em out after I write protect my originals.

Backup, backup, backup daily!

I noticed many, many years ago that I never went back to the bak file. So I turned it off and I have yet to regret it, however I do save often, often, often. the server is backed up twice a day so I have that to fall back on if need be.

I figure all the extra machinations going on when you save and a bak is made is just another chance for the OS or AutoCAD to foul something up.

I'm with rkent here - I really can't remember the last time I wish I had a .bak file. If the machine crashes you still have the Autosave file but to just go back ONE save seems unlikely. If its important to keep a snapshot do a "save as".

I have turned off the autosave... lags the computer every 10 mins or what ever you have it set to, plus the ac$ goes away after you close autocad.
