Hi friends, I have been playing around with Archi 2010 and I see it can produce different types of hatching by pre-defined objects, walls windows etc.
What I want to be able to do is create pre-defined layers and draw my 3d objects using these layers. Example: Lets say I have 2 layers setup, one called solid and one called ply. I will then draw 3d objects on each of these layers. Now what I want to be able to do is to use the section / elevation commands to create the sections with the solid layer showing a wood type pattern and the ply layer showing a ply type pattern.
Is this at all possible.

it is possible, but I do not have time to explain it at the moment. Check back later on, I will have time this eve to look into the best way to set this up.

basically, Layer control is less of an issue in ACA. Each wall type, window type, and slab type will have a section hatch attached to it, rather than each layer type with that. What you will need to do is read the help files on AEC materials. Once you have the materials set up the way you wish IE the hatch patterns for the surface, section and render material (not necessary if you do not need). You will need to assign each item to that material by style, or by object if you wish. So with a wall you would click on the wall, and edit its style "per new ribbon interface" click on the Materials tab, and change the material assignment to the desired AEC material which should appear in the pull down list. If you assigned the item by style, it will appear with each use of that style, if it is an object override, it will only show on that single item. Keep your shrink wraps with no material assigned so you do not end up with a strange render if you decide to use render materials.

I want to draw objects such as side panels, doors, rails etc. I have setup a template file with pre-defined layers and I choose which layer i need depending on which part I will draw. Therefore in the end i will have a furniture item with parts drawn up on different layers. Lets say I use the section command on a cabinet and the section cuts through the mdf sides, marble top and solid wood edging. I would like the section to show the correct hatching for each sectioned object. The objects I will be drawing are not simple objects like walls or doors. I will look into AEC Materials, in the meantime thankyou for your help to date.

I will have to look into the materials per layer idea, but Mass Elements might work as well for you. They accept the AEC materials as well, they can be done with complex shapes, and are very flexible.
