My plotter (HP600) is capable of 36"w x inf. When I plot a 24x36 the preview is correct, but it prints it out 24w x 36 so I am waistn' paper and have to trim....if I change from landscape to port. the preview is off of my paperspace. What do I need to change?

Just a guess but did you try to make a testplot with a slightly smaller drawing. It could be that your drawing is to large (could just be by a tiny bit) which causes the plotter to plot your Drawing the way it does in order to plot it completely.
Let us know how it goes

Are you plotting from model space or paper space?

Are you plotting to a particular scale like 1/4"=1' or 1:1?

Have you tried checking off the box for centering the drawing on the paper?

Have you tried, just as a test, plotting "to fit"?

Make sure your paper size / roll size is set to 36" wide, also check if you have to AutoRotate to save paper option on your plotter.

What page size are you selecting? Is it Arch D?

What do you select under the heading Plot Area - What to plot? Display, Limits or Window?

Do you specify a plot offset for X and Y? If so, what settings do you use?

We are running a HP DesignJet 500+ (24" width paper).

I know that HP and other plotter software drivers come up with a Normal is upright like they use in Graphic softwares. Make sure the landscape option is hit instead of the Portrait like Windows will set it for you.

I also make up a whole new XREF file for rotated drawings. I call it PLOT.dwg. Just Xref in the originally intended drawing, rotate it 90 degrees and hit PLOT then. Ignors the the whole Landscape versus Portrait issue.

I changed the title for you as I don't think when people search for an answer to this problem they will find this post as you had named it "WHY OH WHY does my plotter crap out on me?"
