rendering tutorial for total beginner

this is my very first time trying to render anything. I drew a basic 3d object and without changing any of the default settings did a render, only took 7 sec it was too dark but i could see my object, i tried adding lights and now i cant see anything. any one know any good tutorials for a complete beginer on the render part? I can draw the 3d objects and thats where my ability stops
