johnnybean Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 hello , im self learning 3d cad to render kitchen photos and im creating closed polyline profiles and trying to extrude them around a poly-rectangle and keep getting "profile and path are tangential , unable to extrude the selected object " Plauing with UCS but cant get it right. Now im extruding lengths and using slice to mitre them together , very time consuming . Need help . Quote

johnnybean Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Ok heres an example of how im trying to do this . I have no problems extruding crown moulding along a path but this never works . extruding door.dwg Quote
czc Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Ok heres an example of how im trying to do this . I have no problems extruding crown moulding along a path but this never works . I tried using your shape and drew my own polyline rectangle, it extruded. So then I checked the properties of mine and yours and the difference was that my polyline was not closed. Don't know if that is the issue. I am still trying to use your shape to extrude though. Tried sweep and that works. Quote
johnnybean Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 Sweep ? Not sure if that is an extrusion command available in Autocad 2006 which is the version im using ?? i can extrude closed pollines such as crown moulings along a path but never around a rectangle ?? i`m so confused !! Quote
Martian Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Just wanting to know if you figured out the solution to your problem...I am a cabinet guy and also have had quite a few problems with extruding, most likely due to my lack of understanding. I use 2007, which was the year of the big 3D addition, I think, tho' I may be wrong. There are two commands...extrude and sweep, and I haven't really delved into the difference. I was able to sweep your pattern, but not extrude it, along the path. I have at times been able to extrude items along closed polyline paths made on top of original rectagles, for what it's worth. I often get the tangential issue as well... my best guess is that Acad doesn't like to extrude 2D shapes along paths if the shape is, as it were, lying flat on the plane that the extruding path is on. Rectangular shapes by nature have at least two side that fit this bill. However, as if by magic (read: I don't know what's going on) the molding will appropriately turn 90 degrees at each corner of a rectilineal path. After trial and error, I'll get it to work... My holy grail is to understand this. Unfortunately, I'll need it to work it out in 2007 as I have addons that are not supported for '08, 09, or '10. Additionally, as a side topic, I'd love to figure out how to automatically create miters on crown molding extruded around the 3 sides of a cabinet. I can slice the molding presently, but as it is one solid I end up having the slices continue across the solid where I don't want it, and rejoining the undesirably sliced parts using the union command. But I digress. If I could master this extrusion issue I'd be thrilled beyond belief. PS - In case it clarifies things...I make cabinets and furniture and can get profiles for molding. If you look online on cabinetry with ornate molding you'll see at a glance what the scenarios are. You'll see where I'd need to slice the solids as well to represent real world glue joints; I do this in the models as well in order to get my parts list. Quote
johnnybean Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 Yes i have recently found out that there were many changes from 2006 which i use to 2007 . I am going to do an upgrade soon . As fas as the crown moulding being extruded i have had no problems extruding around a polyline which follows the line of the cabinetry including short little 1/2" break faces at pilasters etc. In the plan i create a layer extrusion lines and then i flip the view to LS then copy the crown from my mass moulding library and extrude the path . The only issue i have had is with using rextangles as an extrusion path. i have a massive library built aswell including 3D mesh corbels , Appliques , and the cad files from local moulding suppliers . Sweep is not a command available with my version of AutoCAD Without fully understanding it , im sure you must orient the UCS in a certain position relative to the WCS when creating each shape . Oh well , hoping to figure this out soon. Quote
john1983 Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 hello fellow bean, im taking it that your surname is bean??? I think ive sorted it, I put the piece that you are wanting to extrude on a 45 degree angle on one of the corners then extrude along path see it that works?? Quote
johnnybean Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 Wow that does actually work . The only issue is that the final width of the extruded mldg. is that of it rotated at 45 degrees . well i have to i guess stretch and rescale the profile so that at 45degress it is same width as it was perpindicular .Very cool thought , thank you very much. From everything im reading lately , Autocad 2008 is the way to go. Much better 3D commands . Time for an upgrade i think !! Quote
