applogies I'm just getting used to sketch up as I'm teaching myself how to use it.
anyone know how to make a materail look glossy?

Not without rendering the file. Have a look at Podium...

or search: kerkythea, it's free and works rather well.... if you don't feel like forking over the $$

Podium is easy to use for people who will not friendly with rendering.
kerkythea can give more realistic result and free of charge but need
to friendly with rendering like 3ds max!:)

To be honest Podium uses the Kerkythea engine. You are correct in that Podium is easier but I have seen some great results using the SU2K plugin.
Podium is easy to use for people who will not friendly with rendering.

I'm using the Sketch Vray plugin to do my renders, just stuck on how to make some materials look glossy

you can play with highlight glossiness & reflection glossiness value. you can see attach image what i means!

I showed above setting for glossy and explained what value you should play!:)
