Laurel Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Hello I've created a drawing using base and projected views of a part. Is it possible to change any references to this part so that I can change the part shown on the drawing? I've tried the 'edit view...' option, but the file reference is ghosted out. I want to make modifications to a part, and the drawings to which it is referenced, but keep copies of the unmodified part drawings. At the moment, any modifications I make to the part will still be shown on both drawings because I can't change the references. Thanks in anticipation Quote
JD Mather Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Defer Updates (F1) or new part number (after all if you make changes it is different) comes to mind. Quote
MarkFlayler Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 You can use Design Assistant or use this method: http://rand.com/imaginit/1/rss/viewitem.asp?feedid=BLOGS_MFG_ALL&guid=680 Quote
Laurel Posted July 7, 2009 Author Posted July 7, 2009 Thank you both for your suggestions - Very appreciated. JD - The Defer Updates option is not exactly what I am looking for. I want to retain copies of two drawings (.idw), each with there own seperate models (.ipt). The second .idw and .ipt pair is a copy of the first, except that the reference to the .ipt from the .idw has been changed to reflect the new filenames. I'm not sure what you mean when you refer to a 'new part number', sorry Mark - I've never used the Design Assistant (DA), but having looked at the help files, please could someone please clarify a few points about it? I assume that I can only make the changes to filenames by accessing the DA via Windows Explorer so that the manage option is available? What do I then need to change in order to change the filename references I am interested in? It's not obvious from the help files I've seen, and can't seem to rename the reference directly on the DA. As for the alternative method you suggest - that looks EXACTLY like what I want, and is potentially an easier option than the DA. Except I can't get it to work When I change the name of my original .ipt model (which has been modified since it was first shown on the .idw drawing) and then reopen the .idw drawing, I am not asked for a new filename, but views of the original unedited model are shown. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks all. Quote
MarkFlayler Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Paul, Works fine here, make sure you are renaming the IPT as well so that Inventor does not automatically resolve the reference in the file. This essentially tricks Inventor into looking for the resolution which you can then pick. If all else fails, move it to another folder or outside your current project workspace. Quote
Laurel Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 Thanks for the suggestion Mark, very appreciated. I got your method working. It seems that something in my project directory (I don't know what) was giving the results I mentioned earlier. In order to get the 'Resolve File' prompt, I needed to clear out the contents of the project directory (other college assessment files) completely, apart from the .idw and renamed .ipt. Everything then happened as you suggested it would - thanks again. I only needed then to copy the contents back again. Could someone explain how I might achieve the same results with the Design Assistant? (Please see my previous post). Quote
