When I plot my drawing to a pdf file the text does not seem to transfer as text. Which means I do not have the ability to search for text in Adobe Reader. The layer information transfers just fine. Am I missing some switch in the properties box to ensure the text transfers correctly? I am using 2010lt if that matters. Thanks.

what method are you using to plot to pdf? What type of font are you using? does changing the font to a different type have any effect?

I went to output / plot and chose "dwg to pdf" under the printer / plotter name. I am using "romans.shx" font (came with the drawing)

I plot to *.pdf daily, never a problem.

The *.pdf is an image of what you see on the screen. Exactly.

The font doesn't have anything to do with the plot, an "image" of the screen you see.

Changing the font does not have any bearing at all on the "image" you're producing.

Chelsea...just realized that the font (roman.shx) is not recognized. When I change the font the text transfers and I am able to do a text search. Thanks for responding and making dig a little deeper.

although the pdf is an image if the font is a .shx like romans is it isnt searchable with adobe, if it is a .ttf then it is searchable

Does this mean if I choose a font to use I need to be sure and choose a non-shx font in order to be able to search the text if I convert to a pdf at some time?

That is not true.

Text created with TTF fonts can be, and usually is, converted to searchable text in the PDF. It all depends on the PDF driver used. The latest DWG to PDF.PC3 file does convert TTF text correctly.

Text created with .SHX fonts is converted to vectors in the PDF, which means of course that Acrobat will never be able to "read" or "find" it.

The PDF file can be booth raster and vector format. Also the text can be saved as text or as image, and even the fonts used can be embed in the file. Some PDF creator software will let you to do several settings, while other programs are simpler.
