how do you add materials to faces and not the whole object

Im creating a cabinet and I need to render it. The interior of the cabinet is a different color than the exterior and the edges are a different grain direction than the rest of the cabinet. How can I select what faces I want to apply materials to?

Hold down the Ctrl key and then click on the face where you want the material to apply. This will apply the material only to the selected face.
