Adding points to a surface, only one direction?

I am learning rhino coming from other nurbs software and am a bit perplexed
by how to add points to a surface. I have found the tool that allows you
to add points which basically adds a horizontal line with a few points to
a surface.. however I can't figure out how to add more points along this
horizontal line.. it just has its set number based off the surface.. is there
a way to do a perpendicular "add points" to go in the other direction or
to add more points to that horizontal line?

I hope I am making sense, for horizontal I mean if it is a lofted surface
made of 2 end curves that are oriented vertically (as I realize it wouldn't
always be horizontal).
