Hi

I'm doing a 3D drawing of steps and I'm trying to do the stringer by using the 3D polyline to outline the outside edge of the steps. I've managed to outline the steps to get the right angle but for some reason I can't seem to extrude the polyline. I keep getting the same message that I can't "extrude non-planar objects". I've checked that everything is on the same plane and it looks ok....so where am I going wrong? :?

And before someone comments....yes, Polly is still having problems with her polylines! :D

I can't see where you could go wrong drawing a stair stringer. How were you doing it? What do you mean you "managed to outline the steps to get the right angle"?

Can I ask why you are using a 3Dpolyline? Just curious.

Well, the stairs are those wooden open type so I've just drawn the treads. So, I was trying to get the side stringers using the outside edge of the steps to guide me. Not sure I'm explaining myself very well! I'm following instructions from a book and I'm doing everything it says, so can't figure out where I'm going wrong! Trust me to get something so simple, so wrong!!

What does it mean when something's a "non-planar object"? Sorry, if thats a daft question to ask but I'm getting desperate now!

Draw all of the lines in one plane, and use presspull to extrude the shape. This way, you don't need a closed polyline. Presspull works especially well on complex linework when you want to create a solid from a profile.

What is your floor to floor height and what is your maximum allowed riser height? Do you have a Construction Master calculator to help you figure out your riser heights (if not, I highly suggest that you get one)?

Just tried that and it still doesn't work! Ok...now I'm really getting desperate! Where am I going wrong??!!:?

It's possible that while you may have thought you were grabbing the outside edge of the step AutoCAD grabbed something else.

Can you post, or send, the CAD file for us to examine?

Thank you! you were right! I moved the stairs away from the main building and tried it again....and it worked! Yay!!! :D

Just a lucky guess on my part. You did all the work. Congrats. :)

I may have done the work...but you solved the problem!! Had been trying to sort it out for AGES!!! So thanks.... :)

That's two lucky guesses I've had this year. I'm on a roll.

You're entirely welcomed.:)
