Yes I have done this before when a customer has changed the template he wanted us to use halfway through a job. Sounds like you may have the same problem.

First of all the new template must have the same attributes and attribute names as the old one.

Open your drawing with the attributed template.

Insert your new template in an empty space as a block, exploding it as you insert.

Reblock the new template with the same name as the old template; you will be asked if you want to override the existing block definition- say yes.

You now have two templates on the same sheet, a new one with blank attribute values, and what was the old template that has now changed to look the same as the new template BUT WITH ALL THE ATTRIBUTE VALUES KEPT.

Delete the block without the attribute values; and rename the new template block before saving it (to avoid any conflict later).

You may have a problem with the attributes being in the wrong order when you come to edit them, if this happens then do the explode and reblock again, this usually put them back in the right order.

(This is something to do with noun/verb selection settings as you reblock but I haven't got my notes here at the moment. I'll try to dig them out and add the solution later just in case you get this glitch).

I hadn't understood the question but following nukecad's answer you can miss out the explode stage IF all your attribute tags match.

Rename your existing block to the name of the future block. INSERT the new block and accept the "redefine?" question. You can actually placing the new block provided you have accepted the redefine. Now ATTSYNC (or BATTMAN) the block and you should be there.

If the attribute tags are different then theres not a lot you can do without a custom LISP.

Cheers dbroada;

I had always done it using the explode so that I could see both borders on the screen at the same time.

If we all did things the same way life would get boring.

If you do go with the explode then before re-blocking the border ensure that ‘Object Selection’ is ticked in Tools>Options>User Preferences.

This should make sure that the attributes are in the correct order.

If you need to re-order the attributes use DRAWORDER to bring them to the front in the order that you want them to appear in the attributes dialogue box before creating the block.

(As you bring each one to the front of the order it goes to the bottom of the ‘attedit’ table so you must do ALL of the attributes).

again another way, you can use BATTMAN to reorder your attributes. I have never used BATTMAN as it is (for me) a relatively new command and ATTSYNC does all I need. I don't think BATTMAN was available on 2002 and I don't think it is included with LT either!

hi Nukecad,

i got what you said, but the problem is that i have made a toll pellate in which i have put these drawin templates.. whats happening is that when i click the template and place it on the drawing.. i will have to explode it manually.. this way i am not able to transfer..

also i tried to see that TOols>options>user preferences but i am not seeing the "object selection" option at all .. :?
